Hi Lozza. Drag on the impeller is entirely normal. The axle sits on a film of oil, obviously when cool it will be thicker and the drag more noticeable.
When checking your turbo for wear look a the wear on the vanes. If the edges appear curled over then there is wear somewhere allowing the impeller to make contact with the housing. Vertical and horizontal movement is normal due to the bed of oil the impeller spins on. The best tell tale sign that the turbo is worn is in the axial movement (in and out) along the axle of the impeller. There should be next to no movement in this plane, if there is then something is worn allowing the impeller to impact with the housing. Not seen that "upgrade" before, it appears that all thats different is a bearing race rather than the standard bushing and a seal. Suppose it might mean a faster spool-up time, less lag... Not sure... |

This is too much play. plus you can see the wear ring on the housing as well. Axial play = 2-3mm
