Clutch... whistles?
Dear fellow Defender enthusiasts,

my car is a neverending source of the most astounding quirks I have ever experienced in a vehicle. I still love it to bits though Laughing

So, now my latest strange occurence is a short whistle when I (or just before I) reengage gears, raising my foot of the clutch pedal. Like a short puff from a little steam organ. It occurs randomly, but more and more frequently the longer I drive.

What on earth could that be?

Does the clutch operate via a hydraulic mechanism? I found no fluids of any kind when I checked the Defender's underbelly.

Car's got 82k miles on the clock and drives fine otherwise...

Any ideas? Or anyone had the same issue before and got to the bottom of it?

Turbo dump valve?

I reckon the clutch master cylinder as that is the only thing it could be (trapped air on return stroke?)

Hmm, both could be it. However, I would presume the turbo dump valve only doing it's job when accelerating, i.e. when reengaging gears and pushing the accelerator down again. I'll have to keep an eye on the rpm tomorrow on my commute, as I recall, the turbo does not engage on low revs, so if it persists and I am too low on revs while changing gears, it must be something different...

Clutch master cylinder sounds like "everything has to come apart", right? Where would I check before spilling all the mechanical entrails on my driveway?

It's a very strange sound indeed.

My clutch made a screeching sound for a while and it turned out that the clutch plate springs were coming loose and causing metal to metal contact, it was this that was making the screeching sound. Landy had done around 45,000 miles when this happened.

if it only does it while the engine is running then it could be the release bearing, which is built into the slave cylinder on a puma.

Pump the clutch a few times with the engine off, that'll rule out noise from the springs in the pedal box.
