Carefully remove both covers and look for damage. If you find big hole burned through of fully burt ECU, than there is no way to repair. Some small burn holes / burnt components are possible to repair, but no 100% sure.
Or post some pictures. I have repaired some of these ECUs, so I think, I can point you.
The problem is shipping and probably also customs. You are too far from Europe. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Dear Tom,
they never have big holes burnt in them.. there is always something else not working..
one doesn't talk at all but no visible damage, nothing obviously blown..
one does not recognise the accelerator signal
etc.

Too far from Europe... well I get 2 loads of goods from Britain per week.
it takes about 7 days unless customs decide to have a go at me ( happens in 10% of the cases especially if the supplier makes a mistake in a line)

My worst nightmare was the bearmach Christmas gift. they held up my delivery for a week because a small calendar wasn't declared!!

I have so far imported dozens of second hand ECUs

if it were impossible, we wouldn't have Land Rovers here.

The worst thing here is that a lot of people drive Hyundais.. they are always in the way. The problem is never how to repair the Defender.. it is the money Very Happy

I see no problem with shipping to Costarica, but from my experience it is a bit different to ship it to Europe, repair it and ship it back, and not pay some tax and VAT (cca. 20%), or not pay some extra money to handle custom declarations and all connected papers. This just adds more money to already high shipping price.
I have 2 ECUs here, that are really burnt. One is after car crash, when the top cover collapsed and made a short circuit on the 12V input - there are burnt some traces on the board. Second is completely burnt inside - everything is black - again some short circuit. This is not repairable.
But I have repaired quite a few partly burnt ECUs - normally after drowning. I had to change on big resistor and associated small FET transistor, and remove small part of burnt board. All ECUs are still working.
Some owner were surprised, they were ready to buy a new ECU.
TD5 ECU is simple to repair, because nearly all components are standard, with standard marking.
Repairing ECUs (and LR cars) is not my full time job, but from a hobby it grew to a part time evening job. And it is still fun. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Hey,

I do not know if this is what you are looking for, I found it on the German forum. Just scroll down, there is the repair of an ecu discussed, with photos.

it is in German language, but google translate is your friend,

cordial greetings from the Netherlands,

Why are you getting so many failed ECU’s? I have never heard of a failed one where l
live in the UK.
Are they TD5 or tdci? I have done nearly 200,000 miles in TD5’s with no ECU issues at all.
My current one is on 98,000 original ECU. Survived oil in the harness as well. Are you using boost starters or driving through deep water?

Sorry, for using this thread, but this is really interesting! A friend of mine drowned his TD5 in iceland Crying or Very sad
I tried to repair his NNN500020 by replacing two burnt IRL540N FETs (upper left in the first picture):

While I know which way to hold a soldering iron but have no special knowledge about these ECUs, that was all I could do. No other obvious damage. He installed the "repaired" ECU and the two FETs burnt again.
So, do you think the ECU could still be saved? Could you point me to the other parts you mentioned?

thanks!
Frank

I think it is possible. From memory these are for the big switched power supply for generating 85V voltage. And from your last picture is visible, that not only those big FETs are broken, but also a small component in SOT89 package - transistor? diode? hidden by the metal part of ECU body. It is not easy to find all broken parts. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

These will need specialist repair, you can’t just go changing parts in the hope that it will work.
You can get an extension harness to relocate the ECU higher up if the vehicle is likely to encounter deep water.
