Hello pj2106
Easily done... ![]() Vehicle and Caravan (as recommended) needs a Chassis (then Bodywork) inspection. I took my friend (last year) to view his D4, after being rear ended (on one corner...quite badly) and this test determined the route from then on, all done with lazers and quite an involved process, his was fine, apart from 2 months and 8K to fix, which his insurance covered, as the driver that hit him...(in a Transit)... was uninsured ![]() It looks like your rear Cross Member has had some previous welding undertaken... ![]() If the vehicle is twisted or misaligned / or showing any 'crabbing' when driven then things can easily get expensive quickly. It will all come down to the 'book value' for an 9 year old Defender (even with a degree of Price lift post end of production) and the bill to fix, you should assume that what you have done to it (your £ in the vehicle) will count for nothing. Insurers will take least cost route (for them) if written off, it will be all about what Category the vehicle gets assigned A B C D N or S https://www.gov.uk/scrapped-and-written-of...-writeoffs If structurally OK, then the damage is fixable relatively easily, but through a good body shop this is still easily a few K to fix. Good Luck... SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

The rules for insurance write offs has changed so have a look at the new categories and get up to speed with what it means to your circumstances. you should be ok but it isn't all about the cost only now. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

Well a great service from Luke at A-Plan courtesy car arrived this afternoon not sure about this hybrid malarkey it makes no noise when driving I may actually get my hearing back :/)
The bad news after speaking to the garage this afternoon is that they have found some issues with the chassis itself and also believe the bulkhead has been moved back as passenger door is now hard to shut Awaiting their estimate to go to the insurer and then baited breath whilst they decide my baby’s fate ![]() ![]() 2002 90 TD5 Hardtop (Sully) Sold 1998 300TDi D1 (Billy) Sold |

Fingers are crossed for you, though I fear that the extent of the damage to the Defender makes me think the insurance company will want to write it off. I hope the caravan is ok.

Well I’ve had a call this morning to say they are going to write the Landy off 😭
So far they have low balled me on a payout price by about 4K from what I’d accept Now has to go for a second opinion 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid) 2002 90 TD5 Hardtop (Sully) Sold 1998 300TDi D1 (Billy) Sold |

Disappointing news
![]() Would you consider buying the salvage and sorting/arranging the repair yourself? I had an accident (hit in the rear by 3rd party) a few years back in a C-class. The insurance company wrote it off, not because of the cost of the repair, but the length of time I would be in a courtesy car (the hire company Mercedes used were charging out a like for like replacement car at something like £170/day). Car was 2 years old and valued around £15-17k. They paid out and I bought the salvage back for less than £7k and it was repaired and back on the road in a fortnight. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

Thats a really disappointing outcome.
As you do not appear to have an agreed value policy, you now need to be prepared to haggle. Who is providing the second opinion? Remember that the assessor appointed by the insurer is not your friend. He is there to minimise what the insurer has to pay. You need to be prepared to show that to replace your vehicle with a similar age/condition will cost £xx at retail. For this you need evidence of what defenders are selling for at retail. You will also need to establish with the insurer the condition of your vehicle prior to the accident. Their book prices usually work on poor good and excellent as determined by their assessor. Also depending on the category of write off, you do have the option of buying the vehicle from the insure for a reduced settlement. This can help mitigate some of your loss if you have spent significant sums on the vehicle. |

Gosh it's shocking the bulkhead has moved from what looked like quite light front end damage. What a pain, I feel for you.
I know I said it earlier but it might be worth speaking to Matt Spencer at Carriages Auto Services to see if you could be tempted to buy back and repair with a galv. chassis. If it was going to be a keeper, I'd think it would be worth it? On happier note, I'm glad to ready you've had good service from A-Plan, despite it not being the result you were hoping for.
