Obviously for many, the holy grail of conversions is the LS3. However, it's still pretty pricey for most mortals. MD Engineering do a 3.2Tdci Engine Kit for DIY fit at 'just' £13k. Not bad. And there's still something about the legacy of a Td5 that draws me back to this, not to mention running costs, maintenance, Ford ancils DNA etc.
http://www.mdengineering.co.uk/3-2-tdci-engine-conversion/ However, it's only offering the 'crate' 200bhp. So I'm wondering what we think needs to be done to get it to the Nene 3.2 Volcano's 270bhp (or indeed the magic 300bhp) and at what cost? http://www.neneoverland.co.uk/listings/lan...-3-2-tdci/ One assumes it's the sexy extras. Bigger VVT, modified airbox, bigger radiator and intercooler, full remap, etc etc. Any thoughts? It looks an appealing option at this price, especially if one could eek 270-300 out of it. Plus it retains the Defender heritage of a Td5. Finally, given the Ford to Ford swap is one of the main advantages, does anyone know if these same advantages (from an ÉCU point of view) would translate to adding a Ford Durateq 3l V6 or is this just nonsense given we're swapping fuel types? "If it came down to LS3 vs 3.2tdci, it would be LS3 all day long."
In principal, as a self-avowed petrolhead, I wholheartedly agree. But if you could get 300bhp for £15k, that's quite a saving. I also wonder, and no doubt others more knowledgable than me will confirm, whether the lower BHP (albeit pretty heafty torque figures) will allow for less upgrading of Diffs, transmission etc, or whether they have to be upgraded anyway? I don't think saving money is relevant in passion projects, after all a 3.2 or an ls3 makes very little financial sense 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Yup, you're right. Just need to work on that budget then. Monsieur Le Grenadier

It's torque that eats drive train parts, so the answer is no, I'm afraid. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Or fit a Toyota 3UZ FE V8 around £1.5 k for a full engine, R380 adapter plate from Syncro throw in some cash for clocks, fuel change, fitting etc Pronably get it done for around £5k
280 - 300bhp 400 - 500nm depending on tuning. Torque band isnt far off the TD5 either Bolt on super charges as well as twin turbo kits available push power to 500bhp+ You can get away with 400 - 450nm on standard tranny ideally upgrade but it will hold. |

I'd have the 3.2 over LS3 myself, I think its because I see the defender as a utility vehicle, where as the LS3 is more suited to a Chelsea tractor

AJC if you're spending £15K on an engine swap then chances are you're not going to use it for utilitarian purposes 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

I disagree with that Kit, I would rather have a 3.2 over and ls3 Russell

The LS3 conversions never really made sense to me. Id rather have a Defender with a sensible engine and then a GT86, Supra, Evo 9, Scooby any number of properly fast cars that can actually put the power down and have a Defender too

i'd have a 3.2tdci over a LS3, and we run an LM 5.3 in one of our trucks! Cheers

Wow, loads of different views on this one.
What's intersting is nobody has actually been on here, running an LS as a daily and actually put any input or their views on every day ownership. |

Given the 3.2 Tdci has been fitted to transits and rangers since 2006 wouldn’t it be a huge amount cheaper to pick up one of those from a breakers, tear the engine down to make sure it’s OK and fit that? Granted you’d have to deal with engine management, clutch/transmission adaptor, plumbing and engine mounts yourself.. but 15k? 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2
