I fancy one ,I know when I first started laneing I had a 600's on 5.5 rims and a number of tow ropes but as time went on more and more kit got loaded in the back of the 90 ,then I had a set of front and rear ARB's fitted and a lot of kit got left at home,so with the puma I thought I would like to try just a rear Kam electric locker it would be handy when pulling my twin axle caravan off a wet pitch and again when on a shoot or a badly rutted lane just give me that little extra bit of grip.My 90 does not have traction control fitted so again could do with a little help ,I don't really like limited slip diffs so the Kam locker looks like it could be the one for me.Have you one fitted ?

Less shock loadings on components from spinning wheels and less erosion on the lanes. Last edited by SteveT247 on 12th Oct 2017 10:25pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Why KAM and not Ashcroft? Quick Google shows the KAM to be more expensive. Ed

Once you factor in the cost of an air compressor, tank and piping, the Ashcroft locker is probably more expensive.
The electric Kam locker is most likely also simpler to install! |

sako243 I think miker is right the kam would just about work out cheaper ,this is not my reason for wanting one ,the simple fit not having to have a compressor air lines and wiring sounds better to me,also I have had a pair of ARB's before best bit of kit money can buy took so much stick and never failed in five years, but I don't want to turn my 90 in to a out and out off roader and would like to try some thing different .

If you don't do much rock-crawling, then you should consider an Ashcroft ATB

I'm not trying to pick a fight - I've no personal experience of the Kam stuff. I can see how the electric side of things would be easier to plumb in. But the having recently done a pegged Ashlocker in the back of the 110 the ancillaries don't need to be expensive. Case in point - my air compressor, tank and piping cost well under £100. Admittedly it's on a 300Tdi which has more options. But a second-hand air-con pump, bracket and associated pulleys were sourced for ~£50, there was then probably about £20 worth of pressure switch, push-fit connectors and what I used of the piping (I bought a big roll off eBay for other stuff). I actually sourced a tank for free off a mates P38 but it's not needed but scrap yards are a good source if you do want a tank. The additional benefit is now I have a pretty hefty on-board air supply for running tools etc. The limiting factor is actually the 6mm piping from the pump but trying to find a pressure switch that had >1/4BSP fittings was a bit of a pain and I (should have had but couldn't find it in time) a pressure switch lying around anyway. In less time than it took my twin cylinder compressor (similar in spec to the ARB ones) to pump up my 265/75R16s from say 21 to 30 PSI I inflated one of the tyres from empty to 35PSI. (I'd got some wood between the rim so deflated it completely and had someone jump on it whilst I pulled it out). Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

ash locker all the way
then arb then if you cant find anything better kam we have used them for years in the off road side of things.arbs are good but parts are expensive when they fail and the ashcroft ones are better built. kam used to be good way back but poor quality and weak components that break even in medium use put a lot of us off.the kam shafts we used to run broke with 33" tyres on. poor aftersales finished the deal off for me. i wouldn't bother with lsd for uk off road work.far easier to to be proactive with a locker. we use vi air compressors 100% duty models and a small tank which allows other use inc tyre inflation |

I've no experience of Kam, but I'd echo what Mdm said, Ashcroft lockers are excellent and their after sales service is top notch. I've run their lockers for the past five years in two different Defenders and wouldn't hesitate to buy them again. Yeah, they may work out slightly more expensive with the compressor, but you know it's going to be robust, reliable, and do the job from feedback across a number of forums etc. Kam on the other hand is a bit of an unknown.

I would have serious reservations about the longevity and reliability of slip rings and solenoids in the environment inside an axle case.

The Kam locker is a very good strong unit. However it's probably one of the hardest to fit as the mounting ring has to be welded on perfectly square to the axle tubes, lots of work in comparison to the Ashcroft or ARB unit.
