CB radio recommendation

Can anyone suggest a good, small CB radio for my truck please? I'm looking for a physically small footprint ideally.

This one is really small

Albrecht AE6110- reportedly a good radio

or this one which looks identical

CRT One- allegedly a copy/rebranding of the above

Lafeyette do one called the Venus where the screen, microphone and speaker were all in the fist mic and then a small box could be hidden away but it is more than twice the price of the first two.

The 1st two are available fro 4x4cb.com who I have dealt with and are superb.

The Lafeyette is listed on the thunderpole website.

Personally I have a TTi TCB 900 with the front facing speaker but it does take up a single din slot with the DIN mounting kit and is not a great deal smaller without it (but it is short front to back). 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

I use this one, it's a Thunderpole T800 nice and small, the only problem with it was the speaker was underneath, so i put a better speaker just above the CB so i can hear much better now

I'm liking the look of the Albrecht AE6110. Certainly as a starter. Any advice on the aerial Guys? I have been looking of the 4x4cb site, quite a lot to look at! Mike

I have one of the Sirio HiPower antenna's mounted through the front wing which gives pretty good results but is slightly directional.

I used to have a long springer which wasn't bad and was a lot bendier whenever it hit anything (that said I haven't managed to break the Sirio either).

One issue with the Sirio antenna's is that they use a special SO239 base (much like amateur radio antenna's) rather than the 3/8 stud that most CB antenna's use so if you wanted to be able to change from one to the other you need an adaptor which is available but not cheap (for what it is). It is only possible to convert the SO239 to a stud and not round the other way.

A lot of Defender owners mount their CB antennas on the rear vertical section above the gutter line (normally on the offside) on a PSM-1 mount. This puts your antenna nice and high but will limit you to a springer type antenna as they have a 3/8 stud mount and you will hit trees (I have my amateur radio antenna's on the roof rack and they shake trees all the time, hence I have to get versions with springs or very bendy whips depending on type).

You will also need an SWR meter so you can correctly tune in the antenna. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

I have an Alan Midlan 42 Multi, it is a handheld (porto), but you can exchange the batterypack for a connection to an external 12V supply and external (fixed) antenna. So then it is really small and added bonus you can take it with you outside of the vehicle. I also have a fixed setup (also Alan Midland), so this is a handy way of communicating while the co-driver/navigator is outside giving instructions negotiating difficult tracks.

Interesting one in LRO this month that has a twelve volt socket so no need wire in as such. For Seventy quid.

Thanks everyone for their input. I'll probably go for the cheaper end of the market for a starter unit, fixed in the truck and see how it develops from there.

I was thinking of fitting the aerial at the back near the gutter, fixing to the vertical side above the small rear window (next to the door) as there is already a hole but the truck usually lives under a carport so I'm restricted on height so may have to go for a wing fitment. Mike

I have my antenna at the back as you plan to do - I used a hinged coupler for that purpose between (springer)antenna and mounting base.

I will probably only use it twice a year so think I might push the button on the Midland 42 Multi handheld at £110, unless anyone has any better ideas? Rob

2014 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Aintree Green

I run the Polmar Venus or as it is known now the Lafayette Venus. It is a lovely if not a little full on CB that runs all the different settings for lots of countries. you can fiddle with all the settings to you hearts content.

It hides under the cubby box and the mic hangs from the rear view mirror. there is a speaker in the base as well as the mic head. All the buttons is on the head so it is a compact and convenient unit, not to mention the speaker is clear and easy to understand.

The antenna is on the front A bar and running a 4 foot firestik or a Thuderpole red devil gives good range when in use.

Devon-Rover any pics of your setup? Sounds interesting, I was contemplating fitted an aerial to my front A-Bar, do you find it distracting fitted on the front?
