If you have a towbar...
I too mine off and put a fixed, galvanised simple step on: Click image to enlarge Mine's a bit battered now... bout £15...available in lots of places: https://www.amazon.co.uk/towbar-step/s?ie=...bar%20step or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Towbar-Rear-Step...SwZJBX-7Jw Mine will never rust now as it's stored in a dry garage Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

your plan sounds fine to me but leave the holes open, liberally spray/wipe with ACF50 every few months iand it will last a long time DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Paint the faces that mate with the cross member with Waxoil or Dinitrol before assembly to keep the moisture out of the joints. Darren
