1. diff centre ok? 4 pins or 2 pin?
2. How much play on t box, 1/8turn can be expected on flanges! Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

does seem alot of play in T box, i would be looking to investigate further on 1/4 turn
diff - preload on it is wrong, set up wrong hence the noise. it will go pop at some point although may not be for a long time, depends how bad it is. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Hi James thanks i understand pre-load has got to do with shimming.
The humm i spoke of earlier is from the new "secondhand" front center portion i replaced. I presume the shimming on the pre-load between crown wheel and pinion is not right which causes the humm ?? How can i "fix" that bearing in mind i am 800 km from nearest LR spares agent. (the backlash was very little on replacement) Dries |

A hum from the front diff could be caused by incorrect backlash between crownwheel and pinion, incorrect pinion height, incorrect pinion bearing preload, incorrect differenctial bearing preload, failing bearings, or any combination of the above. It is hard to say that any single adjustment will be the right one without stripping the diff and rebuilding it accurately.
It is also possible for a new diff to hum or whine before it is run in, in which case the noise may simply decrease and become unnoticeable abfter a while. |
