If not the MAF sounds just like the MAP sensor on the inlet manifold, they can be cleaned up, or not pricey to buy new.

Whining transfer box... when you say replaced... do you mean with new, reconditioned etc... or just a random one off of a breaker? Are you certain it was the correct ratio?

Recon under warranty, where I bought it from. I have questioned the ratio but they said it was 1.410 which was what was removed.
I don't know who the recon unit come from as they won't tell me. They said it drove fine and the whine had gone. Unfortunely 3 hours back and it just as bad maybe worse. The box removed was either a 43d or a 57d , they have fitted a 36d which they said is just the casing and the internals are that of a 1.410 not 1.211 which is a 36d So I have to take there word for it now. It is entirely possible Alex that the MAF and MAP could be faulty from new. Best practice is to unplug the MAF and go for a drive. If there is a difference then you know that is the problem. Repeat with the MAP sensor. When these are unplugged the ECU does not receive readings from them and so substitutes the lack of data with a standard set of values (ideal values set by the factory). Whilst you are in the engine bay; check the crank sensor (drivers side low down on the bell housing) these can get very dirty and oily and send miss information back to the ECU. Check the wiring as well it is quite exposed and prone to damage when moving gearboxes about. One worth checking is whether the ECU is registering the gearbox in high or low ratio when in high ratio. Sounds odd, but the ECU changes the throttle response from being progressive in high ratio to linear in low ratio. It could be that during the gearbox change and ECU remap something went wrong and you are now getting the throttle response for the low ratio whilst in high ratio. Do you have access to a nanocom or alike? must be someone down Gloucester way that could lend you one to find this out. |

Cheers Geobloke for your detailed help.
I did disconnect the the maf and drive, made no difference. Didn't do it with the MAP. But I have had it on autologic and a friends snap on computer and map and maf readings are those which are excepted. Checking the cranksensor, done. Cleaned it and no difference again. No codes etc. And live data looks fine. I haven't checked for wiring issue with it though. It plays up when hot so maybe the crank sensor wiring causes issues when engine it hot ? Not sure how to check if the ECU is reading the high/low or not, how would I tell? But the issue remains the same even with the work carried out under warranty. The did fit a new pressure regulator !!?! There is a post on here with the same symptoms which turned out to be the flywheel?? I will try and find it. I do here a slight Thumping/knocking noise from around the gearbox tunnel. I'm thinking of getting nanocom to be honest as it seems to be the best. Where is the best place to get it from? |

The roughy idle when slowing down happened before it went back. But since they had injectors tested etc it
Is poor on the motorway. Where it use to pull Easily at 70 going up Hill as well. Could the new seals need time to seat properly. I've done around 250 Miles since ? |

Ok it seems like you have been quite thorough. MAF, MAP and Crank aside. spend some time checking the wiring. best way of doing this is to start her up and flex the wiring loom to see whether the idle falters. start with the parts of the loom that bend around corners and pay most attention to the wiring to the crank, injectors and around the back of the block. when the engine heats up and begins vibrating any issues with the loom can miraculously appear. As for the eco check any diagnostics system should be able to tell you whether the eco thinks it is in high or low ratio. if you are actually in high but it is reading low ratio this may be your problem. in which case check the wiring, switch etc. Nanocom is only available through blackbox solutions. it is relatively expensive but invaluable when diagnosing TD5 gremlins. |

Checked wiring with engine running. No fault.
I did notice that it has what I believe to be excessive diesel knock at idle . It's had new genuine LR seals and washers, new fuel regulator and injectors tested (I was told) ! Also I did plug it into my friends snap on computer and looked at the high low switch. When In high it says it in low and vice versa ! But I checked my other and it's the same. So not sure on that. |
