Gordon the 1989 90
OK, so it's not 'officially' a Defender but here's my 1989 Land Rover 90 pick up as it arrived home last night. Seems fairly original and unmolested.

Odometer reads 135,000 and it's clearly seen some work judging by the bodywork. However, the chassis seems pretty good (to me at least) – no sign of any rust apart from perhaps the rear chassis legs. Plan will be to give the whole thing a good brush down and oil/Waxoyl/whatever in the Spring.

The TD engine has long gone, and the previous owner put in a ex-MOD 2.5 NA diesel, along with a new Borg and Beck clutch kit and fork. I've no plans to change this unless I have to.

There are a few little jobs to do which should keep me busy over Winter. Drivers door will only open from the inside if you pull the locking button up at the same time as the handle, seats need covers/recovering, radio needs fitting, new bulbs needed in instrument panel, load area needs a lining, cab roof lining needs seeing to, new sliding rear window required, adjustable height tow bar required, wheel rims could do with a repaint, etc. etc. Enough to keep me out of trouble I reckon. Also considering the slick shift mod to cut the gear travel down a bit.

I'm still undecided about the canopy. On the one hand it is pretty solid and won't rip or tear, but on the other I always think they sit too high and make a lot of noise.

Look forward to being able to learn more about these motors from the forum.

Nice original farmer spec 90.
I wasn't a fan of Land Rover decals but they look 'right' on that colour and configuration.

One to keep as it is.
Get that chassis treated, and look after it, there won't be many around like that in years to come. Wink 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Thanks for all the kind words. Gordon (for it is now he) did his first run to the animal feed merchant this morning. Starting to get used to the gearing. Didn't have much time to get out and start looking at which jobs I want to tackle first, but have decided that I definitely want to keep him as original as possible, just perhaps with a few select/tasteful mod cons to make the owning experience a bit more pleasurable. I think new door and window seals will be first on the list.

I like Land Rovers like that.
The only thing I don't like is that they tended to come with 205s and you're better off with 7.50s.

Where about in Norfolk are you? There seem to be a reasonable number of forumites around here.

Why do you say I'm better off with 7.50s Cupboard?

I'm just south west of Norwich, off the A11. If there are ever any local meets I'd be up for coming along (although I'm out of action until the end of November now).

More ground clearance under the diffs, lower rolling resistance. Better on and off road.

They were standard on the 110s of that age but not on the 90s for some reason. They only became standard on the 90s a bit later on.

The other good thing about 7.50s is that a lot of people don't like them so (at the moment at least) you can get
nearly new takeoffs for a sensible amount of money. I was looking at repainting my wheels and getting a new set of tyres but it worked out cheaper just buying a whole new set of someone else's wheels with tyres already fitted.

Thanks. I'll definitely be wanting to paint my wheels, so I may well end up doing the same in that case.
