Pop upon applying drive
Hi Guys,

Thought I would ask here, as there is a small intermittent noise coming from my driveline which I cannot place, and is quite odd.

Basically when I apply drive (half way through releasing the clutch, but once vehicle is moving), sometimes I hear a 'pop' sound. It really does not sound like metal on metal, and happens in reverse from a standstill (sometimes), forwards 1st gear (but not straight after I have heard it in reverse), or changing down from 3rd to 2nd using engine braking. It does not matter if the wheels are straight or cornering, flat ground or not, and some drives I hear it maybe once, if at all, and other drives I hear it a few times.

I have tried to listen with the window down, and someone along side, but cannot place the origin of the sound. I have no other whines or clunks, and the gear-change is smooth. Thought it may be a CV slipping, but then it would do it all the time.

Has anyone ever heard the same?... or can shed a little light on where to start to look, or what may be about to fail Razz

It's done only 64,000 miles.

Thanks heaps! 2008, 2.4 Puma 110, Silver, 7 seats, sunroof, Winter pack, not enough mud on it!

Just returned from LR who fitted a new rear Axle A-frame ball joint. The Tech said the original one was not badly worn.

And the 'pop' still exists. We went for a drive and also in the carpark listened. He suspects that the next culprit may be the rear right drive shaft spline slipping a little upon torque application.

Anyone experienced this sort of failure before?... and how long between the odd 'pop' and drive failure. I don't do any hard off road work... mostly normal driving. 2008, 2.4 Puma 110, Silver, 7 seats, sunroof, Winter pack, not enough mud on it!

I had both rear drive shafts replaced under warranty- splines badly worn. The noise was more of a clunk than a pop. Not really sure why they're such a problem on defender.
