12v Power Sockets
I have various in-car gadgets that are powered through a 12v accessory (cigar lighter) socket. I'd prefer to power them via DIN/Hella sockets which obviously would require swapping the plugs to suit. Can I simply snip off the existing accessory plugs from the "gadget" power cable and connect the feed and earth cables to the new DIN plug - or is there more to it than that?

The 12v feed is only live with ignition on. There is a 12v illumination also. No reason in my view why you cannot alter or extend. The spades are standard blade size but the illumination slightly smaller. With these you could go plug and play and keep original wiring and plug hidden No Guts, No Glory.

Appreciate the info Steve, thank you. Rather than getting rid of the original dash mounted accessory socket, I plan on supplementing it by adding a couple of DIN sockets elsewhere e.g. One in the rear to power my fridge whilst travelling. What I'm seeking confirmation about is whether I can snip off the accessory socket plug from the fridge cable and replace it with a DIN connector without creating any unforeseen issues?

This a good thread for a rear socket:

I've put a DIN socket in mine to power my cool box. Not sure if there's enough current capacity to power something like an Engel though Question

Hella/DIN sockets are great and typically rated at 10 amps.

As to whether you can convert existing plugs to DIN, it really depends on the plug. Some have fuses and/or circuitry built into them to change voltage, so they can't be simply swapped, unfortunately. Darren
