Serviced my Defender this afternoon, which is the first time I've ever serviced something that belongs to me.
When I drained the engine and transfer box oils, they were exactly as I expected they would be. Engine oil looked like used engine oil, it was black but not smelly, didn't have anything untoward in it and I put about the same amount in as I took out (6l in total, and I know it should be 7 but it's half way up the dipstick at 6). Transfer box oil had a few bits of metal on the drain plug, correct quantity and consistency and was still a bit transparent yellow-y colour. The gearbox oil was much runnier than what I put in, was black with hints of red (I've never seen red oil before), left a load of shiny bits in my drain pan and I drained quite a bit more out than I put in. I refilled it with 2.2l, and I'd say got about 0.5l more than that out of it judging by the levels in the bottles. Any cause for concern? What are the symptoms of an overfilled gearbox? Thanks to all of you with more experience of these things than me! I'm used to just sending oil samples off for analysis but that seems a bit overkill for a Land Rover |

the factory oil on my 2011 was red and fairly thin when I drained it at 10k miles cant explain the black, metal bits are probably a result of lots of crunchy gear changing. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |
