Never seen a narrow track with a non-rotating eye! Was this a service mod? |

They all should have been upgraded at some point. Other issures are when people take the locking pin out because they only have fixed pintle on their trucks. Glyn |

Peter, you don't want one- they spend 80% of their time off the road being worked on Yet another good investment by the Army. Glyn |

Oh Oh!?!
What's the problem on them? Just saw one at the Bovington tank museum behind a TUM and it looked pretty sturdy. WANTED: SII or SIII in max 1.5k |

They are basically the same as a Wide track but with WAY more complicated brakes which keep on messsing up. Glyn |

Glyn do you mean to say the wide tracks have been replaced with these
Surely this means a healthy cheap supply if wide track Sankeys on the market? |

Yeah, they have all been replaced...... this was about 2 years ago now so most of those wide tracks will already be out there... maybe not many savings now (pluss all the wide tracks are rusted to pieces!!). Glyn |

Hi Guys,
Sorry to be a pain, but i have a 2010 110sw and was told i could not mount the nato pintle direct to the rear cross member as the pintle could not be opened/closed to attatch the sankey as the door mounted wheel gets in the way. Is this true? If not, do i need to reinforce the front and back of the crossmember as it seems a bit flimsy. Cheers Steve |

biffa, yes you'd need to reinforce it. The X member isn't strong enough as it is. The wheel would also foul the Nato jaw.
I don't know if there are any reinforcing plates out there or if you'd have to make some. I seem to remember that on the 110, the fuel tank would cause you problems fitting a reinforcing plate in there. The X member has captive nuts in it for tow brackets to be attached to. If you go with one of the options above you have a little more versatility. Let us know how you get on. |

There is a fitting kit available to reinforce the crossmember when fitting the NATO pintle.
You will need (probably) to remove the wheel from the door to use the coupling (or else move the mounting higher up the door, or fit a better (aftermarket) wheel mount, or simply bung the wheel in the trailer). |

I can confirm:
.. The wide track has a fixed eye - you need a rotating NATO jaw, not the fixed DB one .. If you mount the NATO straight to the X-member, you can't open it with a 235 tyre on the back (have to open the door, which is a real PITA) .. You should strengthen the X-member if you're mounting straight to it. .. The satnadard LR towing pack covers up the bottom 2 fastenings on the X-member. For a limited time only, you can pack out the top 2 bolts with washers and that'll mean you can shift an unladen trailer but it isn't strong enough for anything more than a temporary shunt) Click image to enlarge I looked at trimming my standard LR plate so that I could access the threaded holes and mount the NATO direct to the X-member or just cutting access to the holes and using a spacer plate but it was still irritating that I couldn't open it without the back door being open. The Dixon Bate setup that a lot of people have is excellent - with 2 plates for NATO and drop ball. However, it is very low and does drag a bit. I used to catch my LR one all the time and the DB is lower still. I went for a 2" receiver with the straight out plate for the NATO and a drop plate for the 50mm ball. It is braced to the chassis like the DB and LR ones so is rigid as fook. Correct - it's not type approved but you'd need to sheer a 10 or 12mm hardened pin - like the DB - for it to fail so I'm not worried. I also bought a receiver ring to fit a shackle for recovery. I can now tow the Sankey with ease, take the hitch off when not in use (saving shins and thieving punks), tow a lower 50mm hitch, connect direct to a shackle for recovery and all without any compromise in departure angle. Issues: the 2" with a straight through connection is slightly lower than the X-member. That's great for opening it with the back door in place but does mean the Sankey's nose drops slightly. Because it is braced to the chassis, you can't mount jate rings at the rear. That means you have nowhere for a break-away cable on the trailer. I suppose I could fasten it to the tie-down rings as it wont take that much force. I moved the electrics to the X-member. A simple job. Click image to enlarge Picture before I mounted the receiver.
