So it seems my starting motor is getting worse.
Normally every tenth start, or so, my starter motor would fire, but not engage to the ring gear resulting in a horrible teeth shatterring noise....it has recently become worse with the starter doing it at 50% of the time now which can be quite embarassing, not to mention the concern with the potential damage it is doing to the teeth on the pinion and ring gear. Does anyone know if this can be fixed with the starter rebuild kit with the plunger....or should i look at a new starter or a new dual mass fly wheel? The DMF has started the ocasional 1:1 vibration at idle suggesting lazy damper springs as per a previous thread...... anxiuosly awaiting some sage Defender2.net advice on where to focus my efforts next........ To be honest with how cheap the solonoid plunger kit is why not give it a try. It may just be that the contacts aren't good enough to throw the driver into the starter ring fully giving you those tooth crunching moments.

Unfortunately the starter solenoid on the 205 is just a solenoid and does not move the pinion gear forwards.
Well worth removing the starter for a look though. Might just be able to clean it up. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

What drives the pinion forward to engage then or is like the old helical engage drives?
Is there another solenoid?....can it be serviced? Are you thinking only a new starter would fix things? Patrick |
