Certainly worth speaking with your local power company. Old poles are a pain the arse to get rid of so they may well do a deal. Be aware some will be rotten (which is why they have been removed) but if it is just a wayleave termination they might be in decent condition, potentially anyway. *Power* poles are generally thicker and longer than telegraph poles as they have to bear a lot more weight. They will be creosote coated which usually goes in a few inches as they do it all in a vacuum chamber to get it deeper in. Funny things, sometimes the inside (heart wood) rots away but the outer shell will be good and solid. 2011 110 USW

I believe that creosote has been banned for domestic users.
If you are licensed I think it can still be obtained and used. Good luck trying to contact the utility companies, or at least finding someone to talk to. I would imagine as their poles are a 'waste' product, they will have a way of getting rid of them. A bit like Network Rail and railway sleepers. I've never known anyone legitimately get sleepers from them but there are plenty of companies who re-sell. I do know that if you talk to the guys who replace them, you can sometimes do a deal ![]() |

It would be very odd for anything to be under the surface however it is not impossible. Normally any bracketry, earth wires etc would be removed on site before the different bits going into different bins at the depot. So far as I know it is now very difficult if not impossible to use "proper" creosote apart from some exemptions of which the utilities is one. All I can say is that the stuff still being used burns your skin if you get it on you ![]() 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |
