Swapping transfer and gear box.
Hi all,

In the middle of rebuilding my spare transfer box and will soon jack the car up to remove the gear box as well. What is the fastest way to do this ? All out as one with the engine attached? Split the transfer box and gearbox dropping each separately ?

Thanks

James

Here is progress with the LT230 strip and rebuild.

I just use a transmission adapter on a trolley jack and take both gbox and tbox out from the bottom. V8 90...WIP

not a bad plan. I reckon I could fabricate a transmission cradle fairly easily to fit my jack. Thanks

To be honest, at 35 quid from eBay it wasn't worth making one V8 90...WIP

I used an engine crane and dropped the gearbox and tbox as one lump, suspending it through the access panels

I used a bit of 4x3 timber on the transmission adapter (which has a variable angle anyway) V8 90...WIP

well I made a cradle out of scrap steel then went over to the steel place to buy some sheet for the series 1 chassis and they dropped in a free length of tube which I turned down using my drill press and a file to fit the hole in the trolley jack. Worked really well. Clutch, fly wheel and crank oil seal changed. Turns out there was oil contamination from a very leaky rocker cover gasket which I shall change. Did the spigot bearing as well using the hydraulic method of extraction.

On to the LT230 rebuild - not great news. Rebuild kit from ashcrofts cost about 100 quid - new sump (bigger capacity) and bearing spacers cost 100 quid, new diff gears 40 quid, needed a new selector fork, high gear assembly and high gear selector assembly 100 quid, sealant etc about 20 quid then I noticed that the garage that removed the box a year ago had failed to disconnect the high low and the difflock switch and ripped the wires clean out of both - cost 80 quid. I also went for a sleeved case (ashcrofts provided the sleeve and a local machine shop fitted it - 70 quid) and the HD cross pin for the diff at 45 quid.

So that is a total of £625, cost of a recon box £500 + 180 if I wanted it sleeved, larger sump and uprated. I suppose I have learnt a lot and can be 100% sure everything has been done by the book but it has made me think that Ashcrofts prices are actually really good on their recon products considering the guarantee provided.
