BW, just curious, but any reason why you went for them instead of say an Ashcroft set?

That seems to make some sense. Contaminated oil can do all sorts of nasties, particularly if you don't know how long it's been in there. LR's recommended 80K miles without an oil change is too much to my mind. 2 Years / 24K is what mine will get.
I wouldn't be using a standard diff as a replacement. It'll be a 2 pin/4 gear centre open diff at the very minimum as I suspect the front is a single pin/2 gear. I had some ideas that I might trial it at some ALRC events but I think it's a bit too nice for that, so some kind of locking diff would be useful. I also do not have traction control so another reason to upgrade the mechanicals. I'll need to address the whole lot as it suffers way too much slack in the driveline, suspecting diffs as the halfshafts and drive members are good at the hubs. If you get it fully stripped i'd be very interested to see what has worn. |

It looks like the mayonaise you get in rocker covers on engines used for short trips. It doesn't get hot enough to burn it off so it just forms a snotty emulsion. |

In case anyone needs to know, and for future reference, the part numbers for the single piece halfshafts have been revised since they were last posted on this forum.
Single-piece halfshaft part numbers: Short halfshaft - LR072976 Long halfshaft - LR072977 These have superseded FTC3270 and FTC 3271 respectively. The list price for either is a blistering £294.29 + VAT, fortunately my dealer is an excellent place which generously gave me a more substantial discount than I had dared to hope for, bringing them into the same ballpark as other contenders of high quality. The label on the box nowadays states the country of origin for these, so here is a trivia quiz for anyone who wants to participate (I was quite surprised): In which country are Landrover's single piece halfshafts manufactured. Is it: a) The UK b) The Democratic Republic of the Congo c) The Republic of Korea (South Korea) d) Belgium e) The Czech Republic Sadly there is no prize for the right answer (except possible a feeling of smugness). |

The Czech's know a thing or two about drive shafts, look at Tatra trucks. They make a Defender look like a toy off road vehicle with only moderate ability
It's worth noting that if you try and order those part numbers from the after market suppliers you just get the original two piece shafts - because the parts catalogue supercedes to those numbers. |

It's not the Czech Republic.
I don't know that any single-piece aftermarket shafts are available yet, are they? |

I havent found any, that was my point. You'll find suppliers with list this part number, but you just get the two piece shafts turn up.
tbh you can take the country of origin labels on the packaging with a pinch of salt, i've had them where it's said "Made in UK", but when you open the packet the actual part has Made in Germany or what ever on it. I think they're labelled when they arrive at Land Rover's distribution centre, and sometimes the labelling maching operator puts the wrong country in. I suppose they pick the country from a drop down list and click the wrong one. I suppose Democratic republic of Congo would be the most unusual one in your list. |

I canmot believe that those are genuine LR single-piece halfshafts at that price, but would love to be proved wrong!
Which indy is offering this staggering loss leader? It's not the Democratic Republic of the Congo, by the way. |

It could be they've found the OEM for the shafts and got them at a sensible rate. Or are they just selling the old Discovery 1 shafts. Do they fit a Puma diff? |
