I've sort of done this while rebuilding my originally 2.5 petrol 90 as a 3.9 v8.
As per the above link, if you want to keep the tunnel and seat box you need to use an LT77 gearbox. The petrol/TDI LT77 has the wrong length input shaft so you need a rare long stick LT77 v8 box as fitted for a short period to Defenders before the R380 came out and also to some range rovers. I managed to get a knackered one and then have Ashcroft combine it with the donor Disco v8 lt77s to make a stronger v8 lt77 for a Defender. I had to use a later gearbox crossmember to get my Rimmer Bros stainless exhaust through but that may just be because of the exhaust. The v8 doesn't do any less mpg than the 2.5 but sounds great and goes like stink. Do it! Any questions. Please ask. David |

LT95 tunnell and floor plates are a rarity, so best not to go that route if you havent got these already

thanks. I havent, saying that, they are being chopped out of the RR because ive got an R380 going in that which requires a different tunnel

I think an R380 tunnel is closer in shape to an LT85 than a LT77 version but I never managed to find out definitively if the LT85 would fit in the easier to obtain R380 tunnel.
I decided in the end that i was going to have spend some money to solve the problem by buying parts and I may as well invest it in an lovely fresh Ashcroft gearbox to fit the other bits I already had.. |

If you wanted someone to do it for you, give Roy Staines a call at JS Landrover 07762 613777. They're near High Wycombe. He's doing a 300TDI defender 110 to 4.2 v8 auto conversion at the moment with video's of the process on utube.

thanks to all posters
would you agree that it would be handy if my starting point had disc brakes already fitted (RR axles), PAS, and coil springs all round, plus battery already relocated. Am thinking those are costly bits to do. have seen a 2.25 series 3 with all that already done... cheers |
