Paul,

Although I appreciate that you are not actually trying to do anything untowards here, it is essentially cloning/ringing a vehicle.

As you are presumably using a second hand TD5 chassis you should keep the ID from that vehicle.

The DVLA points system would require that you retain the chassis and several other components from the original vehicle ID to retain the number. I assume you will be trying to apply only the VIN from the original V8 to a vehicle made from newer parts? Is this just to avoid the issues with emmisions/cataylic converters from using the TD5 age ID?

I agree that this system does not lend itself quite as well to Land Rovers as it is quite easy to swap engines, axles and gearbox with genuine reasons. But the chassis should really match the original vehicle registration or be a brand new ID-less chassis which can be classed as a replacement part. If your TD5 chassis is brand new with no ID it is a little better but still not great IMO.
