I think that's normal - my 2002 Td5 headlights switch off with the engine, just leaving the sidelights on.

It's designed that way, a lot of 80's Rover group products did the same. If you think about it, it stops you running your battery flat by leaving your headlights on overnight.
It will still leave your sidelights on, as these are essentially parking lights. (Side lights on without ignition is actually an MOT check) |

Hi thank you for all your replies. The problem I have is when I switch the ignition on the headlighst automatically come on even though the headlight switch is off. No side lights just main driving lights. I can then still
Turn the side lights on by turning the switch on. It's like the headlight have been powered by a switched live from the ignition. It's not the fact that they come because I left the headlight switch on. I hope you all undertand my bad explanation. |

You said the switch worked fine! Sounds like the headlight switch has given up, but failed in the 'on' position rather than the 'off' position

I'd be taking a look at the headlight switch, if the headlight switch is off the headlights should not be on regardless of the ignition switch position.
Assuming of course that you are in the UK and not somewhere where headlight legislation is different. Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Light switch is the main suspect here

i expect the headlight switch has melted internally and the contacts are now permanently connected.
The switches aren't expensive. and you can just plug in the new one to test it before going to the effort of removing the steering wheel. |

Yes I have ordered a new switch OE Lucas. But the strange thing I forgot to mention is the tail lights are not constantly on but do come on with the sidelights once switched on

Thank you for the wiring diagram. I think this might be a weekend job. I was hoping it would be a switch.

Normal - the tail lights are connected to the front sidelights, as said above the headlight contact on the switch has probably melted and fused together, this connects the headlights independently from the sidelights. |
