Rear Gas Strut - Thought it closed the door as well.....??
Typical me I see a video on a thread here that I can no longer find that showed a rear door gas strut that not only open the rear door once hand was turned but when the door was pushed from the open position it also soft closed the door as well! I went straight out and purchased the Mud version that clearly only opens the door..... Big Cry

Tell me I wasn't imaging it because I can't find that thread or video now and Mud have never heard of one that has soft open and close..... Embarassed 2010 Defender 90 HT

I think you may have been imagining it. There has never been a closing ram. Cool though that would be! 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

A rear door gas strut which had full opening and closing would be cool but would also be fiddly as you would have to lock the door open somehow.

Version 3 the top mounted gas strut is soft opening with some closure asssist.

Soft opening means that the ram slows down towards the end of its stroke.

Closure assist, you still have to overcome the resistance of the ram to start to close the door, but on about the last 1/3 of the ram stroke the resistance of the ram decreases and it will aid the closure of the door in the last segment.

Hope that makes sense.

Self closing rear doors were standard fit at the factory. Laughing

BB, the gas strut you got from Mud is identical to the Version 2 that we offer. I know they are identical as I know their supplier!

Version 1 gas strut is a hard stop. i.e. rear door flies open and unless you control opening the door it opens with a bang.

Version 2 gas strut is a soft stop gas strut i.e. it slows down towards the end of its stroke.

Version 3 top mounted gas strut. Is a soft stop gas strut with a small amount of closure assist. It is not self closing.\

Mine is extremely stiff to close I have no chance of pushing it and letting go like the guy in the viedo I can see the wheel arch flexing under the pressure from the bracket mounted to it as I close the door.... Confused Do they easy up after a while?? 2010 Defender 90 HT

I have V2..

they don't ease off much TBH.

I noticed the wheel arch flex too..and simply put a larger square plate inside the wheel arch and bolted through it.

I don't see it move at all now!

I'm so off/on these. Working like shown in video they look ideal, but then you hear the stories like above and doors/wheel arches flexing and it puts me off again. James

If you are worried about wheel arch box flexing go for version 3 top mounted one.

Mounted to top door hinge and where grab handles are above rear door.

We have them fitted to our own vehicles.

We sell hundreds of these per year and get very few problems reported to us. Any problems are normally down to 'pilot error' or shall we say kindly inadequate installation.

One comment we have had made is we now have 4 dimples in the rear door the rivets must be too long. NO you have tried to drill through the outer skin of the door. The pre 02 version does not fit on my 96 vehicle. Yes because someone has replaced rear door with a later post 02 door.

Gas strut one way at the top and the other at the bottom, one for opening and one for closing? Mike
