Optima red top battery revival?
I've got a couple of optima's in the garage. They were almost "new" a few years back, only had light use before they were removed from the genset they were on.

They've sat on my shelf for a while and are now flat as a pancake.

So what's the best way to revive and recharge them? I've not got any fangled chargers (maybe I need one?) but have a decent bench PSU at work (adustable up to about 30v, and 4 or 5 amps, nothing mega) ... can I just connect up and trickle charge it with 13.4v (or whatever anyone else can suggest?) for a day or 3 and see if it will bring them back to life?

Suggestions on a postcard please.. Thumbs Up Whistle

I bought a C Tek charger for my standard defender battery, in was going to replace it but after a discussion on this forum i bought the charger, its has a recon mode and took about 24hrs to complete Shocked Shocked wow was i amazed the battery has never been so good!! It works wonders, many people say it recons the battery better than when it was new and i can totally believe it, it also has a trickle charge function.
Well worth the £27 price tag Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

If the battery is completely flat most chargers will not start charging the battery. I think that is a safety feature.
My Ctek has also a supply function and I use that for some minutes to give it a little charge and then change over to normal charge or revive depending on the battery.

I have a feeling that the revive function doesn't really work on the Optima batteries but works very well on lead acid batteries and yes that takes a long time but with sometimes amazing results.
Other times however a battrey is dead and even an Ctek can bring it back to life. Roel

Another vote for a Ctek charger. My 50th doesn't get used everyday; and i had the battery go flat a couple of times on me; usually when you wanted to take the 50th out. I thought maybe it was just the battery that was dead. I had charged it with a PSU type charger in the past.

Instead i decided to buy a "Ctek mxs 5.0" mainly to keep it on a trickle charge; and did the regen cycle on the first connection.

Although always on trickle charge; the engine turns over much faster than before - every time i start it; and recently i took it away for the week, and left the charger at home. Never missed a beat and started every day like you'd expect. (even on the battery I though was dead.)

it goes through various modes; and is often rebranded and sold with top spec sports cars as an expensive option.
£60 ish but sound like those Optima batteriies would be restored - which would cost you more to replace.

What I do is connect another battery to the charger as well. It fools the charger and it starts supplying a charge. V8 90...WIP

+1 for Ctec charger.
I have a 12 year old battery still going strong, despite irregular use.

Cool, thanks all. Think I'll be getting one soon. I take it the ctek can be used just as a trickle charger for normal lead acid batteries as well.

Looks good. Won't get one dfrom Halfrauds though... £99! Shocked

Ctek or equivalent is good
You will need a min of 8 amp spec and more is better around 12 amps max if memory Serves me

You need to trickle charge it 1sr and then try a recondition on it ,if it won't charge try it with a recon,it will get hot so a well vented area is a good idea in case f fumes or it going pop.
