Your MAF sensor could be dead and causing these issues, as could a boost leak.
I would check your MAF - If you have a Nanocom/Hawkeye air flow should read about 58 - 60 if its anything else your MAF is dead. Only replace with genuine, VDO or Siemens the rest arnt worth it. I would also check any hoses for de-lamination, splits and cracks. I'd also check your intercooler isnt split. You should be able to tell either if there is oil blow by around a hose/IC Could also be the MAP sensor. Or it could be the hi-low switch swapping you between high range and low range maps... Tbh im not 100% the throttle pot is adjustable. Ideally you need to get it plugged into some diagnostics to check |

As you have a 2001 model you probably have the 2 potentiometer throttle instead off the 3 pot later models.
If one off the potentiometers gets a dead spot your ecu get's confused that is why the 3 pot throttle were introduced. If you don't have a Nanocom or something like that you can check the working with a voltmeter. I don't have my Rave disc with me so I have to do it by memory. On your throttle you will have the following wires: Supply voltage off about 4.5 V throttle position voltage 0-4.5V and one 4.5-0V And you might have a earth cable The 0-4.5V and the 4.5-0V should change smoothly if you slowly press you accelarator. If one off both is not smooth that might be the problem. The easiest way to measure the voltage is on the ecu. But you will have to find the connectors. On the newer modells they are Black plug: 12,14,20,26,36. They could be the same on the old model ( but 1 less) but I am not sure about that. Thank you all for your input. Went to our local LR guru and hooked ECU to diagnostics. Throttle Position Sensor was on#2 instead of #3! Surging gone and motor feels generally more smooth and tractable. Cheers. Nothing suggests poor workmanship like wrinkles in the duct tape.
