Sort of a funny question I know But I changed my oil about 6 months ago and a month ago when I checked it the oil was pristine. Now it has become noticeably dirtier. Could this be from driving down dusty logging roads? Its the only thing I've changed in terms of driving habits.

As the oil travels around the engine in picks up microscopic metal partials, carbon deposits, old oil that is impossible to remove all traces of on an oil change, as it is constantly heating up and cooling down all these factors change the colour and consistency. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

if you have a good air filter the dusty roads make no difference , the black in diesel engine oil is just the soot from the combustion process, oil generally stays cleaner in petrol engines as there is less soot. lots of short journeys or idling will increase soot but dont worry dirty oil on diesels is normal. one other thing that can affect is is the detergent level of the oil, modern oils have high detergent levels to keep the engine clean hence they get dirty quickly but this is AOK as the soot in the oil is no biggie DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Had a sump change after my rebuild as the sump thread had been stripped, oil is still very clean.

It does help to try to ensure as much as possible of the old oil is drained when doing an oil change, I always take mine out for a drive beforehand to get everything up to working temperature and to make sure any particulate matter in the oil is in suspension rather than collected at the bottom of the sump. I then put the front on ramps, partly to improve clearance, but also the drain plug is at the back so it naturally drains better, plus any oil in the galleries in the head and block will drain more thoroughly,
Any residual oil left in the engine after a change will very quickly discolour the new oil but it's not really too detrimental, diesels are a dirty engine anyway and as LR90XS2011 says it's mainly soot from the combustion blow past, a perfectly natural occurrence.
