I added spacer to our 110 and it improves turning circle considerably, almost car like! Highly recommend. Personally prefer the wider stance too.
However mine will be coming off soon as I have new alloys with better off-set. I have 30mm spacers and lick stops adjusted, turning circle is now similar to a normal car and has meant single turns rather than shuffle back and forth more than once. I have a very tight entrance (oooh errr missus) !
Think it will make things a lot easier for you when towing. NB I had both things done at the same time so don't know which (spacers or lick stops) give the biggest improvement, but the combination is great!) |

Lick stops - ooh, err
I don't know about 'needed', but spacers will definitely enable you to adjust the lock stops further and improve the turning circle. If that solves a problem for you when towing then all's well. I had 30mm spacers on my previous 110 and the turning circle was better than the Discovery II that my wife was driving at the time. ^^ I have experienced warships with better turning circles than a Disco 2 ! Optimised for orbiting small planets, it is possibly the largest automotive turning circle in the world!
Personally I suggest adjusting the lockstops first, which may be sufficient if you have standard wheels and tyres. If you don't get satisfaction, then pop good qulaity 30mm spacers on, adjust the lockstops again, and be amazed at the difference. |

The 110 is worse than the d2 by a mile. I could live with the d2 (and did fir many years), but borrowing a large trailer the other week, I found the 110 to be very poor at reversing with a trailer, so an eight meter long caravan would be a big challenge. I pick up the new tintent next week and so wonder how others have faired. V8 90...WIP

I have spacers on mine, don't know if the lock stops were ever adjusted, but don't have any issues with towing or reversing trailers either way. Yes you can't do every maneuvre in one hit, but it's perfectly usable!

I, too, used to tow a big twin axle van with my 110 and never had any issues.

Hello Paulv8
Defiantly makes a difference... The turning circle of the Defender really should be better as standard...for an off road vehicle, maneuvering in tight situations...this aspect makes no sense, it should be better than a London Taxi, straight from the factory. I have the Rakeway post 94 Hub adapters fitted, at 70mm thick, with LRX Wheels with an ET50 specification, so if i'm right, that gives an offset of 20mm a side...not huge, but enough to make a real difference. A 5 point turn is now 3... Our Van is 5.5M long from hitch to rear (so relatively small), the Van itself is about 110 length, if your heading to some 'twisty turny' bits, or just want to get the Van in position more easily, this is a modification worth considering. Good Luck Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Interesting to hear you say this. My 110 can run rings round my Disco 2, which has a TC probably some 8 feet larger in diameter. Perhaps I'd better check if there's any adjustment on the Disco! I've only had it 15 years and never thought to look..... |

Hi Skip,
I'm interested in your Rakeway Hub Adaptors. I don't suppose you have any photos of them do you that could be posted on here? Also, were these special made for you? On a separate note, does anyone know of the advantages/dissadvantages in installing spacers just on the front. Does anyone know how it would affect the Off-Road performance i.e., due to the overlapping in mud ruts, etc.... The answer maybe 'why would you just put them on the front", but I just wondered. Many thanks Steve |

First thing to check is that the lock stops are set to the maximum allowable without rubbing. The advice given in the workshop manual is very conservative and I think allows clearance for snow chains, maximum articulation etc. I think it says 20mm clearance per side but you can adjust it much closer than that.
What also makes a difference is the length of the trailer - the longer the better. So shorter caravans, like that rather lovely Eriba pictured in an earlier post, will be a lot more difficult to reverse than a larger caravan. I adjusted the lock stops on Gracie when she was new and I've never thought about it since. Cheap, simple, insurance-hassle-free option. Dave Green Goddess - 1998 Defender 110 300tdi |

^ I was quite impressed the other day, got home with my Sankey full of Yorkshire stone flags, Un loaded and I was facing the wrong way to where the Sankey lives in the garage...
Managed to turn it round in the drive and back down the side of the house all attached and into the garage at the back of the house No spacers on mine (yet) |

Hello smb 'Any Photo's...but of course... Click image to enlarge I had the standard Post 94 Hub Adapters / Spacers from Rakeway 'adapted' with longer wheel studs fitted that worked with my wheels (120mm PCD and I wanted 38mm of 'engagement' with the wheel nuts). Rakeway swapped out the Studs (ordered from Belgium) at no cost, and were first rate to deal with. Don't forget the Spare... I adjusted lock stops first and it did make an improvement, but then fitted 30mm spacers with lock stops adjusted to max again and the turning circle is now car like. We run 235 tyres which obviously helps. James
