How long should tread last?
I know this is a question which is hard to answer but how long/how many miles should 5mm of tread last? I don't want to buy some tyres 2nd hand only to have to change then again after 6 months! I know there's loads of variables but a rough estimate? Thanks! 1995 300TDi Hardtop Nato Green

Depends on what tread bias type you are talking about? Road, 50/50 ATR or MT? No Guts, No Glory.

There is a lot more to buying second hand tyres than tread wear. You need to know how old they are (tyres degrade over time). How they have been used or abused (if they are fitted to a wheel you have no way of knowing the internal condition).
You should also check for uneven wear, splits and cuts etc.
Can prove to be a false economy compared to known brand retreads or new tryes.

12k maybe, I'd like to see more tread though than that myself. They won't last you long really, No Guts, No Glory.

I'd have taken them off long before they got down to 5mm and disposed of them!

5mm thread on a 4x4 tire like a GG, Cooper or BFG tire. That's about as far as you want to take it I think and they are ready to be scrapped then. No way you want to keep using those tires down to the 1.6mm legal thread depth minimum. Just imagine that kind of 4x4 tires which are starting new at around 13mm thread depth, how much they have been used and abused while loosing those 8mm.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
