I did it few weeks ago - I had to remove the paint of the gutter, to get good electrical contact, for the clamp. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

On a previous 90 I fitted the C.B. so it was permanently in the vehicle and had the same problem after a phone call to the company that I bought it from suggested that I try fitting an earth to the Ariel fitting on the radio and it worked. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

That's interesting ,
I fitted a CB to a brand new puma pick up late last year, I tried the original aerial hole in the wing, Also fitted one to the back of the cab above the rear window, Both of these had readings of the scale, I cleaned to bare metal in both areas, Changed leads and connectors, Checked resistance and checked for shorts, Took a chunky earth wire from the battery terminal or the aerial itself, to provide a food earth, Even fitted my complete set up from my TD5 90 What ever I did I couldn't get it out of the red ?! Spoke to the supplier, he even offered to take a look ( but is too far away to be honest) However -- if I slung a large base magmount on the bonnet it would have a good reading straight away I never got to the. Bottom of this issue , So not a lot of help for you, but I'm very interested in any other replies Cheers Richard |

Antenna and grounding - for proper work of any "standard" CB antenna on car, the grounding of antenna base is a must. And in must be very short - direct ground to car body, or few centimetre of wide "wire". Connecting a wire between antenna base and car battery is totally useless, as it is too long.
Car body works as second "half" of antenna - first half is the antenna wire itself. In the place of antenna base, there is place with low impedance (means low voltage, high current at 27 MHz) slowly transforming to high impedance on the end of antenna wire (nearly no current and very high voltage), where the high frequency power is radiated into the air. Without proper earth connection between antenna base and car body, you will loose a lot of energy (possible nearly all) in the antenna "centre" = between both halfs of the antenna (car body and antenna wire). This lost energy is lost both for transmitting and receiving. Next is proper place for antenna - placing the antenna wire parallel to any metal parts, like next to the windshield is bad. Lot of radiated power from antenna is caught back, by the metal structure and virtually eliminated. Again both for transmitting and receiving. I installed an artificial ground plane after not being able to get a descent ground. Works really well.
