My TD5 (with aircon) has got a loud squeeling noise, looks like the serp belt is slipping.
It's dark now so can't see anything. I'm going to buy a new belt on Monday, but is there anything else I should be replacing? Or anything else that's likely to have caused it? Second that, for a Td5 as well... pick up a tensioner even if just to have as a spare if its not needed. You can then rebuild the old one with a bearing replacement and keep it if it is noisy. Check all the pulley's while you are in there. The tensioner is fairly inexpensive as is a replacement bearing. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Our 90 TD5 was making a similar noise. If you spray the belt with WD-40 and the noise stops, then it's the belt.
If the noise does not stop then it's most likely the tensioner bearings. The belt can be changed without removing the fan, but it's quite tricky. Put a ring spanner on the tensioner bolt and release the tension, then hook the spanner under the radiator hose to hold it there. It's possible to extract/replace the belt but if you have a tool to get the fan off it's much easier. |

Wouldn't the WD40 make the belt regularly slip?

Also consider changing the idler bearing fitted where the ACE pump is on the DiscoveryII (under the air conditioner).
My experiance has been(Disco2) either the tensioner or idler bearing chirps, they then seize and burn through the belt with the harmonic balancer being damaged as the belt breaks. There is a third bearing to check mounted in the timing case for the fan. I gave up on trying to just change bearings as I had mixed results personally and with mates also. A complete bolt on tensioner is the only way I go now, if the bearing has worn so has the pivot it works on aswell as the spring. Removing the fan does make it easier but as has been said it can be done with it still fitted, what's a little skin of your knuckles? Draw a picture of how it runs around the pullies, some are ribbed for the belt, others smooth as the back of the belt runs on them. I usually fit the belt over the air conditioner last as I find it easier to do this way. Double check the belt is sitting properly in all the groves, particularly the harmonic balancer before starting up. Keep all the old parts for emergency spares, I mark the old belt for direction of rotation too. Cheers, Kyle. Cheers, Kyle. |

Yes genuine parts, from Duckworths. Tensioner is ERR6951, belt is PQS101500 (that's with aircon)
Only slightly tricky bit was getting the fan off. I used a good fitting spanner, and gave it a good hard clout with a hammer. It's conventional right hand thread. Use 15mm socket on tensioner nut to pull the tensioner off the belt whist you slip it off the pulleys. 14mm 12 pointed socket and long breaker bar to release tensioner bolt. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

No problem. Don't be put off by the fact that the Land Rover parts sticker on the box says Timing Belt Tensioner, it's not, it is actually the auxiliary drive tensioner. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Sunday morning work out, just replaced the tensioner and pulley and the end pulley, the third pulley was done at the rebuild point, so a clean sweep.
