I had to replace one of those pesky little bulbs behind the heater control dial today, so I set to it. One of the first things I do is to put pieces of Duck tape on the dash where I will be levering out the front panel with a small screw driver to stop it getting marked...some where still in place from the last time I did this. Any back to the business in hand.
Having got the radio out I was engrossed in the process at hand when my daughter, who has Down Syndrome came to the passenger door and pushed in a 1/2 inch drive socket set. She had noticed I was working on the Defender and surmised that I'd need some tools, and she ment to help. I said "Thank you" and went back to the job in hand. She arrived back with a 1/4 inch drive set and a 3/8 drive socket set. She wasn't sure which I might need so she was covering her options. A little surprised, but I thanked her again. Actually I was having difficulty removing the bulb as I was shaking with laughter. Next up was a armful of spanners both metric and imperial. She was unable to carry the toolbox as it was too heavy but she was slowly but surely bringing it's contents. By now the passenger seat and floor was looking kind of cluttered to say the least AND I couldn't find the item I actually needed..a small tweezers to remove the offending bulb. I was busy searching when I heard my daughter arrive again and looking up I was nearly decapitated by the breaker bar she had in her hands. This was getting serious so drastic action was called for. "Could you ask Mammy to bring me out a cup of tea?" I asked and off she went. This gave me time to complete the job at hand. Anyway it took me longer clearing up the tools than it did replacing the bulb. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

I have my own little helper and jobs tend to take twice as long when he helps.
He does try though and copies what I do, often running off to get his plastic screwdriver Once I get the Series back he will be my 'Gofor' can you go for this, and go for that..... As a kid I don't remember much but I do remember helping my dad. Its the little things that make the memories so while it does add to the job, it really is great so enjoy it My Helper Click image to enlarge |

I usually have the opposite problem, and as fast as I can amass the tools needed to carry out a task, my little helper is wandering off with them.

I have my helper, not little though, every time I put something down that I have been using it gets cleaned and put away. S.H.M.B.O. gets through more blue roll than anyone I know. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

It's coming round full circle for me, my little helper will be loose learning to drive on the roads in January and the last few months has seen me at his beck and call as he's been working to put our old Freelander back on the road, engine swop, brakes refurbished, sunroof out and rebuilt, the list goes on and on!
The one saving grace is that if the kids are really interested then birthdays and Christmas are sorted as tools are for life not just Christmas |

My "little helper" profile picture was taken 25 years ago!!!
I still have the socket set .... £9 from Halfords 30+ years ago - thought it would do until I got something better, haven't yet needed anything better. It started with a kiss, never thought it would come to this. SIII CSW Safari, limestone, (JAC 914N). Where is she now? It's not a car, it's a way of life! |
