Interesting to hear this, having taken our to France and Ireland, never occurred to check theft cover!

I wouldn't worry. Theft is not a problem over here. They should be giving you a big discount for taking it somewhere safer for the summer
Best to check you're covered for fire damage though, in case of a passing riot |

Was surprised by Jonathan post, I thought that all European car insurance mandatory provide coverage in all EU countries for everything the insurance buyer takes as cover in his home country, but then I found this on the EU website:
Quote When you register a car in any EU country, you must insure it for third party liability. This compulsory insurance is valid in all other EU countries. It covers you if you have an accident causing damage to property or injury to anyone other than the driver. It doesn't cover other costs (e.g. the cost of repairs to your own vehicle). You can also take out additional, optional insurance, called first party liability, covering other risks. This insurance extends your cover (e.g. to injuries to the driver, damage to your vehicle, theft of your vehicle/its contents, vandalism, and legal assistance). There are no EU-wide rules on additional optional car insurance. Check the terms and conditions with your local insurer before you travel abroad. Insurers can apply different rules in each country. So your insurance could be limited by time (e.g. a month abroad) or by distance (e.g. 150km from the border of your home country), or might exclude some countries for some types of risk (such as theft). Unquote So much for taking things as a given, I clearly was wrong. Now, thinking further about this, if a UK insurance company is excluding Defender theft coverage from countries like France, what kind of theft coverage do they provide for the UK? Or maybe Defender theft is not a problem there because they think that you are protected by the boundaries of the island and cannot get them off that easily? Eric You never actually own a Defender. hello, I can confirm this is very true!
It is illegal in the EU (Brexit has not happened at the moment) for the insurance to say this thing to you! All insurance must include cover against people taking your car regardless of country. In France the Land rover is a target, but less than a target than when it is in UK. Please do not be afraid to come to France! léo |

Léo, you are only correct as far as the compulsory third party liability insurance is concerned.
Please re-read the quote in my above post which I took from an official EU-commission website. Optional insurance like theft, etc. does not have to apply EU wide, insurance companies are allowed to put restrictions. This was also a surprise to me, but hey, every day is a school day. You never actually own a Defender. Oui, mais/but in France the tier will include a theft because the règles (laws/rules/regulations????) in France insist then that them must so the EU law must adapt to the local no?

I don't think so. I don't know the fineties of french car insurance, but if other EU countries exclude France from their theft coverage (as EU rules clearly allow), France have nothing to say in all this.
Maybe Marine or Emmanuel will change that next week. Eric You never actually own a Defender. My UK insurance (LV) included compulsory 3rd party only cover for the EU. As I understand it this is the result of the EU legislation. However, as I wanted matching cover I upgraded it at a tiny cost as I am on mainland Europe until mid August. I don't know why your insurance company won't include France but I guess it is their prerogative to refuse cover where they see excessive risk. Try another insurer maybe?

Depends of course on your insurance company.
For my Defender (with Saga), it’s a case of “we will provide the cover shown in your schedule”, i.e. fully comp. Peter |

Recently checked my insurance for cover while being shipped to Iceland - Fully comp insurance when I arrive
The policy only covers sea transport between British and Irish ports - no mention of cover if going to the continent Not sure if ferry companies will cover the insurance if they were to sink |
