The Defender upgrades one certainly looks good, but i'd have concerns about the durability of the movable vents.

Ordered the matt black one, even though my Defender is red and I could have had a red one cheaper; just a bit too bling for me. Also ordered the Pioneer SPH-DA120 - on offer at Halford for £299
DD unit should be here today, the chap at Defender Upgrades is very helpful 2015 90 Hard Top 1998 90 300Tdi - chuffed to have another one 2013 Freelander 2 - for posher trips to the shop 1996 300 Tdi 90 Hard Top - sold 19th June 2020 - miss it, loved it 2016 90 Hard Top - demolished Nov 2019 by young driver 3.5 times over the drug limit 2010 90 Hard Top - now sold Ex mil 90 - now sold |

Hi CapnJapseye
I’m thinking of doing the exact same thing. Did you have to buy any other cables for the pioneer to connect up ? Thanks Rich |

I haven't actually got the unit out of the box yet as I have the dash out and doing loads of other jobs while I have access Can't see the install of the Pioneer kit being to onerous, you're welcome to come and see if you close enough, I'm in St Ives 2015 90 Hard Top 1998 90 300Tdi - chuffed to have another one 2013 Freelander 2 - for posher trips to the shop 1996 300 Tdi 90 Hard Top - sold 19th June 2020 - miss it, loved it 2016 90 Hard Top - demolished Nov 2019 by young driver 3.5 times over the drug limit 2010 90 Hard Top - now sold Ex mil 90 - now sold |

Having received the dash I reckon the moveable vents will most likely never be moved anyway so not too worried tbh 2015 90 Hard Top 1998 90 300Tdi - chuffed to have another one 2013 Freelander 2 - for posher trips to the shop 1996 300 Tdi 90 Hard Top - sold 19th June 2020 - miss it, loved it 2016 90 Hard Top - demolished Nov 2019 by young driver 3.5 times over the drug limit 2010 90 Hard Top - now sold Ex mil 90 - now sold |

I’ve ordered both the fascia and double din unit, should be arriving today.
I only have a entry spec 110 DC pick up, No heated seats, no rear wiper, no heated windows, no AC and no electric windows. From what I can see the only switch that will need a new home for and won’t fit the existing blanks is the Hazard. I thought I could relocate that to one of the electric window blanks with a suitable switch. Does anyone know of a hazard switch that will fit straight into that space , carling maybe ? Alternatively a smaller switch that will fit the existing blanks where the heated seats etc would be ? That would be my preference in case I fit electric windows in the future. Thanks in advance |

Well, i fitted it all this evening. To be honest it was very straight forward. Used a hacksaw to cut off the vents from the old fascia whilst in a vice. I went steadily on the cut and the finish is fine.
Ive gone for the Pioneer sph da120 as well and it looks the part. However you do need to wire it into the handbrake indicator light wire, in order to have full functionality whilst at a stop. Without it you cant even set the clock ! I’m looking into bypassing that at the moment . In order for carplay to work you need a usb connection which i dropped through the lower part of the dash and out by the hi/low ratio stick , then plugged in my iphone cable from there. If its just calls and music you want then you can just use the bluetooth connection without carplay. The other problem I’ve had is is getting the stereo to sit far enough back for the fascia to click back flush. I removed the metal bracket that holds the two vents together (they seem perfectly secure without it) . The stereo then slid back a little more but i still have 3-4mm to go. I think that the only thing stopping it is the vents themselves. I had heard somewhere that you can apply a heatgun to them then shove the stereo back but it sounds a bit drastic to me. The other option I'll try in the morning is slackening off the brackets on the stereo to see if it will slip over the vents but it may end up with the stereo sitting at an unacceptable tilt. Ill update in the morning but if anyone has any tips then speak up ! |

Why didn't you buy the new version that's not needing the cutting and plug and play ?

There was a relatively long wait on them and I picked this one up cheap as it was missing the switch panel , which i didnt want anyway.
Ultimately I want to keep the land rover as an investment and didnt want to cut into the dash ! Otherwise yes it would be a good idea |
