Hi,
Under the bonnet tinkering and noticed a hole about 4 or so inches long between the brake servo and the RHS wing. Sure it wasn't there last time i looked Anyway, had a good poke round and couldn't find anything else - bulkhead corners above/below the door hinges etc. look fine. The black piece you can see behind the hole is the folded steel trim below the dashboard, above the pedals. So, is this a common place to find rust? I can't remember seeing it here on my last Defender which seemed to rust from the door pillars inward. Guessing it needs addressed asap - anyone got any advice or tips on how to repair with minimum disruption? Many thanks, Andy... Cheers, Andy... Edinburgh, Scotland http://24heuer.com |

MOT issues due to proximity to brake servo?
Ok, not an easy fix then. Minimum I guess is - wing off, brake and clutch pedal boxes removed, air filter and all that gubbings etc. out the way, dashboard out.... This is growing arms and legs I can see it's at the top of a join or seam so I'm guessing the rust is through to both layers. Without removing more bits I can't see any more rust but that's not to say it isn't there (it was only when I was moving cables out the way I spotted this and it's well hidden from view inside the vehicle). Given the amount of work to remove all of the above and then do a repair, and, still not be 100% comfortable that it's all gone, what are thoughts about swapping the bulkhead out for a galvanised one instead? It's a '95 110 300Tdi with a galvanised chassis, side frames and body cappings already. Cheers, Andy... Edinburgh, Scotland http://24heuer.com |

From my experience you'll have the same all the way across the bulkhead in patches.... Land Rover stopped using joint sealant to save costs.....
I'd check the top edge of the bulkhead under the screen (under the rubber seal) as I suspect it has holes in it and that's how the water is getting in there. V8 90...WIP |

It looks to me like a replacement bulkhead job anyway so as you've already got a galv chassis and cappings I'd do the galv bulkhead too. Bought my 2002 DCPU with one eye on replacing both chassis and bulkhead with galv items in a few years time to make it a 'keeper'. |

Thanks.
Still amazes me how a simple task like checking the clutch fluid can develop into a fully blown bulkhead swap Guess that's Land Rovers for you Cheers, Andy... Edinburgh, Scotland http://24heuer.com |
