My Disco 3 had a new rear diff at 1500 miles because it whined- so don't rule anything out. Must admit hadn't noticed my 90's OEM tyres howling.

My defender originally had steel wheels and latitude cross tyres, they were in general quiet, however i found they used to howl a bits of road with smooth, recently relaid tarmac (a rare thing round these parts!!) they were run at be book pressures for a light load.
Not as bad as the howl from a set of goodyear xtragrips, but a noticeable howl. Have now fitted boosts with conti cross contacts (again set to the book pressure for light load) have found they don't do it. |

I have these tyres and find them extremely quiet - one of the points of keeping them on there.
Check your tyre pressures as they might have something to do with it. Also check your alignment - one thing I have seen is opposite wear on tyres so run your hands on the tread from the front of the car to back, if you find it catches then that can be a cause - swap them round and after a few 100 it should quieten down. |

Also, very unlikely but remove anything stuck in the tread.
I have had a few stones in mine and drives me crazy on smooth roads, I have to always pick them all out! |

It does get worse if I'm carrying a heavy load and varies with different road surfaces which made me think it is the tyres. I've had a 90, a Def TD5 and a 300 Tdi Disco with BFG ATs and GG ATs, all 265/75 and all were good. It's not really intrusive but annoyingly noticeable.
Thinking of changing to 265/75 AT2 so if anyone in the market for 5 Contis with 16k miles, spare unused...........let me know. |

I have a Defender which came with these tyres as new. Nice and quiet until at about 15K miles I thought I'd move them around to even out the wear and included the new spare in the juggling act. - The result was significantly increased road noise, presumably because of the strange wear pattern that tends to develop on chunky 4 X 4 tyres, you could see the even but lumpy wear pattern poking through the canvas spare wheel cover.
So my guess is that unless all 4 of your tyres have been worn evenly from new and NOT swapped about, you will get noise from them. It appears to be best to fit 4 new ones together, never move them around, (they last long enough anyway) and enjoy the relative but not perfect silence.

Got 235/85/16 had them for a couple thousand miles and cant say ive noticed any road noise.

I have never bothered changing tyres around. As said they last long. Just bought the car so don't know whether they've been rotated ( no wise cracks
 ). Wouldn't have thought so at !6k miles. |

I don't find them noisy except at low speeds on Tarmac!

Noise wise, 40,000 miles in and I've Not had an issue with mine. I have noticed reduced stability even though there is quite a bit of tread left.

In view of the relatively "large" tread relative to a road tyre, I reckon they're very good. 31,000ks on ours, I'd buy 'em again.

For the type of tyres they are pretty much what I expected in terms of noise. They don't bother me although my friend drove it and he complained they were much noisier than the tyres on his Range Rover Westminster!!! I didn't have a response
I've covered 7000 miles now and the wheels have not been moved around the vehicle. Any farther South and I'll need to trade the Defender in for a Landing Craft |

Noisy? when the Cross C's are fitted my 110 sounds as if it has a collection of bad wheel bearings.
The only reason I know that it is not the bearings is that the BFGs that I use in winter (I work in and around ski resorts) are so much quieter. Cab someone suggest a a "summer" tyre that is as quiet running as the BFGs? Cheers PeeWee |
