Well. That didn't work...
So I bought a VDO water temperature gauge (with numbers) to replace the standard TD5 unit (with no numbers) thinking that there is a good chance it will be a straight swap... Nope! Turns out the LR TD5 water Temp Sensor is not compatible with this gauge. Actually surprised me considering the VDO nature of the LR gauges. Guess I will have to think about fitting an auxilary sensor in the coolant system to get this working... On the td5 the gauge is ECU controlled, so no direct connection with the sensor. Roel

That'll be why then. Worth the try. Sensor on order to get it working, love numbers on gauges. Somehow seem a bit pointless without them, no?!

Numbers on gauges make people worry! The normal gauge basically indicates "cold, warming up, normal, Oh crap"

That's correct. I see the first half off the gauge working but never seen 3/4-ers hot. It is working temp and maybe a little warmer and then straight to very hot. If it does move but doesn't match, you can change that in the ECU to make it match.
Well that does require some detail on the reference voltage to that of the temperature on the gauge and it can all be resolved. You just need to adjust the temperature gauge settings in the ECU to make it do what you want. On a Td5, from 88 to 105 deg, the ECU drive to the gauge is programmed not to move, so you don't get alarmed, but it goes up like a rocket after 105 to 140, which is way too late. So i've actually adjusted the table in the ECU to make sure the gauge moves during the climb between 88 to 105 to make sure it's more realistic. So back to your issue, if it's moving, it can be resolved, but you require some reprogramming of the ECU to take care of it, but it's not very easy to do. The Td5 will reduce the amount of fuel based on a multiplier factor at certain temperatures as well. So you only want to correct for the gauge reading but not the ADC value from the temperature sensor. Hope it make sense. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. If you want to change the Td5 gauge the best thing to do is leave the original sensor in place (the ECU uses it as part of the fuelling and start strategies).
Add another sensor wired directly to your chosen gauge - then you can use the correct matched sensor for the gauge. You can get pipes with a sensor boss ready fitted/tapped - add this to the top hose. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Interestingly my temp gauge has recently developed an inverse relationship with the throttle pedal. The harder I press the pedal, the lower the gauge reads! Nanocom still reads normally though...

310.284/8/3 VDO 12v 02.95 Hope that helps |
