There is an exception to the rule however. The smart fortwo which had the silver or black tridion safety cell and then plastic door and other body panels was I believe listed by its safety cell colour and not the panels which were the bulk of the colour. This is apparantly because the panels could be changed within an hour and the colour with them. My Dad had a cream one with a black safety cell and it said black on his V5. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

I have often wondered about this, with the Jimny it is listed as black but has gray mouldings which as with the smart could be changed very quickly and would entirely change the way people would describe the car, yes it would still be black but if the bottom half was some eye watering shade of orange I would suspect that is how many people would describe it. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
