Apologies if this has been shown before - anyone any experience with this sort of thing?

I wouldn't rely on one but as an additional layer they work really well.
The one you link to is a variation on the TK102, designed primarily as a personal rather than vehicle tracker although with a suitable usb charger that can and do work well in a vehicle. The TK103 variations and TK104 are vehicle specific and add other options such as being able to trigger a relay to disable the vehicle remotely should it be moving without your consent. They also have a better GPS antenna and are powered from 12v. The text messages you need to send to control the unit can be a bit complex but there is an app (written by me) that runs on Android and iPhone and tries to simplify the process. Be aware that just because a unit looks the same as another one, they are manufactured by a number of Chinese factories and each one has variations on the commands needed, sometimes the variations can be extremely subtle ! http://tkcontroller.org http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

I've a couple of similar ones, very inexpensive and surprisingly accurate.
Ring or text it and it sends a link to Google Earth with its location. I've tested mine many times and they are generally within a few metres so a cheap way of adding another security measure. |

On the one you link to, I'd be concerned about the need for a battery connection. Suggests there's no internal rechargable battery so won't work if someone just disconnects the battery.
Other cheap and nasties have their own battery and can probably be setup to warn you if the battery is disconnected (I've not checked that). It is tempting to have half a dozen of these scattered around though.  |

I've use these.
Both have their own battery. The first one lasts for about two weeks but you can attach one of those phone battery booster things to it that vastly extends the life. The second one is quite big but has a larger battery and it supposedly lasts for 90 days. I've got an O2 in one and Orange in the other, both P.a.y.g. Two networks to give me more coverage options.
I check them about once a week, only costs the price of a text message |

I have a giffgaff in mine, £5 top-up per month (set to automatic)
I text all of mine each night to arm them and every morning to disable them. I actually intentionally drive off without disarming just to make sure they are working as required  TD5 Defender 90

Richard, I have one one too, not identical but similar principle. I would recommend it as it can overcome those that focus on finding traditional trackers in the car. It is an additional layer though and not one of the main tracking solutions I have installed. But as others said, good to have multiple layers and it's not too dear.

I would expect the majority of theives stop looking once they find and disconnect one tracking device, so having 2 or 3 devices in the car is probably worth a go.

The little one you asked about is not fit for purpose. it really couldn't be relied upon for a valuable car. i fitted this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Realtime-Waterpr...SwpLNX-bnw you can actually immobilise the landy with this, also it will work with a free tracking app you can install that monitors the landy real time all the time. The fun you could have with a few of those. Use the relay to sound a continuous deafening siren in the cab....... Or a smoke generator under the bonnet. |
