I suppose if the bearing was bad enough the radial movement in the half shaft wouldn't do the seal a lot of good.
But if the seal had failed then the axle oil is going to wash the grease out of the bearing. |

As is, grab the top of the tyre, then with effort pull back and forward (left to right from vehicles perspective) until the whole vehicle is wobbling.
Aside from small suspension/bush squeaks and creaks you should not hear any noise (click clack, croink donk) from the hub... Well, that was my idiot check after working on bearings/swivel housing anyway I did this with a series 3 I found on the side of the road for sale, 3 out of 4 gave a good 'cronk' - heh heh, maybe the one making no noise was the worst Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

A failed seal in the stub axle actually tends to improve bearing lubrication, but the migrating oil can sometimes get past the hub seal onto the disk.
In the "good old days" this is how the wheel bearings were lubricated and many people revert to this system. |

well thanks, but I'm sure the oil getting past seal must have diluted the bearing grease I don't think there is play as yet but is only noisey at motorway speed

True, but it's diluted it with gear oil which is just as effective and suitable as a lubricant. It also lubricates the outer halfshaft splines.
