Short answer - faulty ignition switch - problem rectified by replacing switch.
Long answer - after heating glow plugs on the main battery finally the day came when neither main nor auxiliary would crank the engine. Roadside assist came and measured some voltages and a current. Current draw with everything off and car locked < 0.22 A. Voltage main battery before glow plug heat 12.5; voltage after glow plug heat 11.7; voltage auxiliary battery 12.8. We attempted a few starts to no avail, but then noticed that although no response to turning key on, we had the solenoid click in as we turned the switch off. We then tried the start procedure with only the main battery in circuit and the engine cranked. So the only diagnostic of a faulty switch was solenoid clicking in as turned the switch back off from start. Thanks all for suggestions. |
