help! more headlight issues!
Somebody help me look in the right place,headlights failed this morning again! renewed both switches, checked fuses, new dim/dip relay, running all led's ,pulled all the fuses in cab fuse box along with checking all relays for signs of corrosion etc, wiring in wings seems to look ok and behind the dash,what i can feel see of it, where else does the stupid wiring run, this has happend 3 times in 6 months! Theyve basically just started working again when they feel like it!

Could be a bad earth. When they fail is there actually power getting to the back of the headlights? That would rule out the LED's as a fault if there wasn't.

I disconnected the multi block on the bulkhead in the engine bay and didnt get 12v, noticed middle yellow relay in fuse box was warm so switched that for another one but no difference, bridged connector that switch plugs into where i was getting 12v but still no lights

test for 12 volts at the head lights may be the earth missing, the for head light earth is behind coolant expansion tank

If you test with a digital meter it may still show 12 volts as the meter draws very little current, and a bad earth will normally allow a small current to flow , easiest way to check a bad earth is to temporarily replace it with a good one direct to the light.

Cheers guys, ill go earth hunting! If that fails auto electrician time! As for the bulbs caterham cheers for the suggestion but im running leds, typical all the wiring is routed in stupid to get at places!

Sorry to state the obvious, but have you put 12v across the LEDs to check that they have not failed. They have drivers built in which can give problems.

Hi there, get what you mean about the leds, but if they had failed presume one would still work plus still no rear lights aswell, ive given up tonight i know its going to be something stupid and simple which winds me up that i cant figure it out as obviously im more simple and stupid than a piece of wiring!

Check the earth on the transfer box, there's is one of the front outrigger too.
Can't remember which side.

There is a diagram of all earth headers on here someone most helpfully put up.

You should be easily able to detect an earth fault at the plug by checking for earth continuity. No Guts, No Glory.

Sorry, didn't realise you had lost rear lights as well. Nothing to feel stupid about . Defender wiring is just extremely complicated, especially when something goes wrong. Start with the obvious and work up to complicated. Check lights themselves as a faulty light can take out fuses. Then fuses and relays. Earth points next. Dirty earth joints cause all sorts of odd symptoms.
Dorset Smith has posted circuit diagrams and earth points in other topics which should help.
I have a simple circuit tester which is a 12v lamp on long wires connected to a crocodile clip on one wire and a terminal connector sharpened to a point on the other. Got me out of a mess on many occasions.

^^^^ The transfer box earth strap is common earth for the rear loom and affects the front.
It has all sorts of bizarre effects if playing up, such as lighting all exterior lights, or lighting the dash up like a Christmas tree.

It's often removed when clutch changes are done or similar transmission work. No Guts, No Glory.

Thanks guys, ill start again in the morn, look for the earth points youve mentioned, brains fried! Its on top of other problems im trying to figure out then getting it in the neck at work by a moron as been starting at 6am but couple of mornings had to go in at 7am because of truck letting me down, then couple that with complaining girlfriend how much cash i spend on it and then we have to use her car because of faults on mine! One headache after another!
