2007 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 CSW Zermatt Silver

Paint for rear cross member?

Hi all

The guy who owned my 90 before me sprayed the rear cross member with black waxoyl. This meant that whenever you climbed in or out or reached into the rear you ended up covered in gunk.

I’ve now had the waxoyl cleaned off but am now looking for something to paint it with. I want something that will protect it and remains flexible without all the gunk associated with waxoyl.

What would folk recommend?

When I did mine in May last year, I went the fairly traditional route of etch primer, regular primer, satin black and clear lacquer, which is holding up very well so far. I don't think you need anything exotic if the preparation is good.

Hmmmm……. That was my first plan. I was just thinking that the waxoyl looked good and filled in various dents but the black gunk that ended up on your hands and trousers was such a pain.

What about Ditrinol? Does that dry so that there is no black gunk transfer?

I think it's less sticky than waxoil but still doesn't dry, as such. It looks ok underneath but I wouldn't consider it for a visible area like this. Darren

I suppose that the look I’m after is something similar to black powder coating, but from a spray can.

Does that make sense? 😂

That makes sense. I'd have thought most satin finish blacks would do what you need. The only think I'd check is that some chassis black paints are not UV stable and discolour in direct sunlight.

I used a paint from buzzweld on my last one and it's lasting really well. I can't remember exactly which one it was, but it was brushable and easy to use.

As above, preparation is key to getting a good final result.

My chassis is black Waxoyled but the face of the rear crossmember is just painted in Frosts Extreme Chassis Black (Satin).
Lovely finish and very hard wearing. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 CSW Montalcino Red

I didn't want all the faff of spray painting,masking and priming so I opted for E-Tech Chassis Paint. Just lightly sand to get a key, degrease and paint with a brush. You would have to be very close to see any brush marks and it dries to a semi matt finish. The actual finish dries to be as hard as porcelain. 2015 90 XS Station Wagon Puma 2.2

Dinitrol definetly stays tacky, my chassis is Sahara sand yellow with all the Moroccan dust stuck to it. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
