You can certainly buy 18 inch wheels that will fit on the hubs, but the question of whether any mods are needed will depend in the tyre size that you want to fit. Darren

Assuming they are Defender wheels and the chosen tyre gives a similar circumference i.e. 265/65R18, then should be any issues James

They are essentially the same diameter as standard tyres, so should fit without issue. Depending on what you've currently got fitted, you may need to tweak the steering stops, but 265 is a standard width so it won't be much.
Whether they'll affect fuel consumption again depends on what you're comparing it with, as well as the tread pattern you choose. If you're going from a 7.50 road biased radial to mud terrrains then it might have an impact. In practice though, it probably won't make much difference. From reading only, the effect on mpg will be very marginal. 18" wheels may give it a slightly harder ride, as less tyre to absorb bumps and stiffer, but handling/roll should improve. You also need to consider it's not just the wheels that are more expensive, the tyres are more for less tyre, for example BFG KO2 265x65R18 tyres are about £163.86 incl. VAT compared to 265x75R16 at £134.95 incl. VAT, adds about 20%.
You may just need to adjust your steering stops, but that's not difficult. Glad you're keeping the Defender though! Any reason why? They look hideous on Defenders as the tiny discs and callipers can't fill out the alloy properly, just looks off.
If you want to fill the archs get some 265/75 or 285/75 tyres. |
