ex-MOD Defender 90 to US ? anyone done it ?
Hi Folks - I've got my eye on a really nice 1997 Wolf in the UK.. apart from getting the SEIL license, has anyone shipped an ex-MOD defender to the US ?

Looking for advice, gotchas and experience pls.. thanks

shipped a few over. paperwork is easy if you have good shippers and the car is genuine and clean. too many folk sending galv chassis swaps and non original one slike pumas out causing issues.

its a pain having to get an export license as well now.

I would think you'd struggle to get an export licence for cutting edge military technology............

trust me its a pain. they have an email they never reply too, same goes on the phone line if you call them.(export license team uk end)
they dont care if its not green or registered as a civi lr they still class it as ex mod.

folk have had issues sending them over without the paperwork.

Obviously up to you, if you specifically want ex-mil. But if you are just after a Defender, there are way cheaper options.

For some reason, in recent years people have started paying silly silly money for Wolf Defenders. Don't get me wrong, they are ok..... but they are pretty basic and about the worst starting point for a road going Defender. All of the "Heavy duty" aspects will only be of use if you plan to chuck it out of a helicopter or take it into a war zone. None offer any benefits for wheeling or road use....

Ex-mil 90's used to be popular with off roaders here in the UK, because they were super cheap to buy compared to civi 90. This is no longer the case however.

Thanks Drumstick… appreciate the wise advice - I’ve already got a ‘93 110 that’s taken me 2-3 years to rebuild, much to the joy of LRParts and RoversNorth… they’re stupid money over here in the US but think they’re leveling off.. when they’re not electrifying or sticking LS3s in them - goes against the Defender ethos in my book. I’m actually quite fancying something I don’t have to do anything to.. open up the sides and go to the beach !

Cheers

The MoD vehicles where normally well cared for, often lived a very hard life, but maintained and repaired with the right bits. So you can often get a solid one.

I know prices in the USA have been crazy on Defenders. But here too. The Wolf is a Tdi and when I've look they seem to be in the £24,000 price range. A regular Tdi Defender should be more like £8000-12,000

agreed - and yet the Wolf 'probably' doesn't need a chassis swap (or major work) or bulkhead replace since it's operated in Africa or the Desert most of it's life.. add the cost of doing a chassis swap and BH replace here in the US and you're getting to the same figures.. think 80+ hours of labour at $120 an hour.. ! it's not apples to apples I know..
