Yes we can all relate to this but, those with the cameras aren't all blameless. A lot of people will have the mentality that because they have a camera it's everyone else that's at fault but if you look at a lot of those clips if they had been driving with a bit more care and attention then they would have seen some of these situations developing in front of them, a lot of their reactions seem to be out of shock as they didn't anticipate the driver in front.
If people paid a bit more attention to what's happening around them then they would have second guessed on what the other driver was going to do. A lot of drivers don't realise that buses have the right to pull out in front of you but so many people get marked because they have to stay behind a slow vehicle. Drive a tractor for a day and see the mentality of people who just have to get past, keep well over to give room on a wide main road and the eejits will stay behind and either, get to some bends and they'll fly past at any cost! A lot of people need to take a "chill pill" when they get behind the wheel. |

Some time ago, the below made the headlines of our national newspapers.
I have as little sympathy for the bicycle driver as for that car driver. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw Last edited by ericvv on 11th Mar 2017 5:19pm. Yes there was some truly terrible driving, but what I found more shocking is just how angry and aggressive some of them were As above embarrassed to to British sometimes James

Looks to me like the filming vehicles are going too fast themselves sometimes or following too close.
1:40 is my biggest fear, though no fault of your own in the lanes. In somelanes even 20mph would be too fast with nowhere to go and blind corners with wet gritty muddy surfaces. It's stop dead or head on. I've had a old farm TDi Defender stop about 2" from bumper to bumper with mine. A focus sliding down a hill and down the bankside to avoid me just. Lots of things due to excess speed mainly. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

People get lost, make bad decisions, are unconfident, some just angry and aggressive. If you have that in the back of your head then It helps deal with bad driving. However it is amaxing how aggressive we get when behind the wheel. Scary stuff.

I remember watching a IAM video some years ago - which I can't find now - in which the drivers attitude was examined. It was an eye-opener for me...
What they said was that the ONLY thing you are in charge of in any form of interaction with another human was your own attitude and thoughts. So if someone does something that affects you, it is down to you to decide how to react. So let's say someone cuts you up - it's YOU that decides to get angry, blow the horn, flash the lights - or not. Nobody makes you angry - you decide to get angry, What I also remember from that video was a good technique to take the anger and frustration out of driving. That technique was to think of other vehicles as not being driven by humans at all - instead they being driven by some form of emotionless robot that's won't react to whatever emotion you feel a a result of their actions however daft they are. The robots aren't trying to beat you or cause you harm - but they are a bit clueless. So if a car cuts you up it isn't a nutcase, homicidal human - instead it's just a vehicle doing something a bit daft but without malicious intent. There's no point getting angry at an emotionless robot - it's just being clueless. In a non-driving scenario - imagine if someone grabs your mug of tea off the table and smashes it to the ground at your feet. You'd feel pretty aggrieved and possibly even angry. However what if the mug of tea had simply fallen off the table and smashed your feet? You'd probably feel disappointed but not angry. So from the same result - a smashed mug of tea - your emotions are very different - one of which is very much better for you and all those around you. Some of the drivers in that video were already angry before the incident and waiting for a confrontation to vent their pent-up feelings and they certainly weren't driving with any form of anticipation or experience. Not good. I do tend to find that driving a Defender does make for a less stressful driving experience - it engenders a more relaxed driving style. PS If only I could remember all of this when some twit cuts me up.... Calm, Dave, calm... Dave Green Goddess - 1998 Defender 110 300tdi |

Although i fully agree - especially with the point above that people make mistakes, get lost are unsure etc - we have lost that tolerance, especially with the camera society...i will say some people do deliberately do things to annoy others - but in fairness that is a minority Mike

People will bump into somebody's trolley in the supermarket and be all apologetic and very sorry, then get in their car and want to call every other driver all the names under the sun!!!!
It must be a something to do with not looking people in the eye, it is certainly a weird phoneme. |

JWL wrote buses have a right to pull out in front of you??? That's something I never knew, when I did my class 1 many years ago one of the principals was that you were not to use the size of your vehicle to intimidate other road users.
As to the other posts about not being angry, I think Guy Martin sums it up in his book about 'the inner chimp'! |
