OEM V's After Market Tyre Life

I know there's numerous tyre threads and the topic seems to have been discussed to death BUT:

I have a query, my defender had 235/85/16 general grabber fitted original.

They have just done 150k kms and down to between 3 and 4mm thread depth so I decided to get me tyre levers out today and change them.

I bought a set of general grabbers off paddocks last year and fitted them today.

Finally to my query, do the new tyres I fitted have the same material as the OEM, will they last as long ?

If it's the same tyre type, size, tread, speed rating etc then it will last the same amount of time?

Not necessarily. I had a Mazda RX8 from new. Original tyre lasted 2 years before needing replacement. Subsequent tyres - exactly same make and type lasted 1 year before needing replacement - same annual milage - same roads and same general usage.

Not a wind up in the slightest

I've heard numerous people say that the second set of tyres will never last as long as the original, even a tyre fitter told me this, but I was always a bit unsure about how true it is.

Maybe it's to do with wear and tear effecting the steering geometry ?

I can't see how there would be any difference. If you are a tyre manufacturer you'd surely just be churning them out at the same plant no matter who they were for

Around 2000 Land Rover fitted BFG All Terrains in 265 to alloy shod 90's but Land Rover insisted the came with the naff white lettering to be deleted. BFG complained of the costs to do this and that is how we had the 11 year run of General Grabber 235XMr Whippy rubbish which are normally removed on delivery and changed for a better 4X4 tyre.
My tyre man has a container full of GG 235's which he gave Scottish Land Rover dealers £50 allowance against mostly BFG upgrades and he can't get his money back on them... 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Why didn't LR just make sure the white lettering was on the inward facing side of the wheel?

Call them and ask but i think the reply may be that when you buy 10,000 tyres you don't need to have to do that? Plus white lettering looks naff.... 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I would've though the same, that's why I asked the question here.

but on reading about brake pads it seems that there may be different material put in the OEM than the same make offered over the counter at motor factors.

Maybe it's all hype though.

Maybe it's just though.

Apologies df1, I've never heard of this. I suppose it's perfectly possible that a tyre manufacturer could change some of the constituents of the compound over time, especially in a tyre like the BFG AT that has been around for so long. I don't really know that much about it, I would have just assumed that the same tyre model from the same manufacturer is going to be the same as any other of the same type. cant comment on the GGs, but new BFG AT are a VERY different compound from the days of high mileage before changing. Rest assured, if you buy ATs now, they are far softer. I'm reliably told that less than half the previous life is to be expected.

I remember reading somewhere, perhaps on here, that BFG were changing the compound of ATs. Are there other things that are more long-lived now then? 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green
