My Logic if buying it as an investor and storing it, would it not be worth spending £10K each and buying say 4 classics..

Its going to be a long time before that goes up... and its not even an adventure or heritage.

I've been looking at Classics such as MGB GT's, Series 2, 3, Moggy's, original minis. All over the past two years have gone up more than money in the bank.

If I had a barn I would rather have 4 toys all going up and stuff I could use Smile

Lock it away for 20 years and don't use it and it might make some money, but I think I would rather put my £40k into something else with 4 wheels if I was thinking of automobile investment.

Happy to stand corrected, but I don't see the long term growth potential and evidence from elsewhere.

Are these really an investment or a short-term bubble that will pop? I'm struggling to think of last of the line cars that appreciate nearly as much as first off the line. E Type, Range Rover Classic, Golf, all gens of LR of all types. JB

It is pretty academic to me as there is no way that I could afford it but 40 grand sounds like an awfull lot of money for something that has never been used but is probably already starting to rust. I feel much happier with my 1997 tdi 300 Defender 90 that I can confidently maintain, modify and generally play with and my Discovery 3 (that I can also maintain but don't want to modify) for the sheer luxury on longer journeys. To me the sooner the bubble bursts on nearly new Land Rovers the better and we can get back to normal trading and use of these iconic vehicles and genuinely classic, historic examples of well preserved or restored series vehicles are the ones that command the really serious money.
If anyone has a genuine 1955 series 1 Land Rover of any specification then I would genuinely be interested in restoring it.

An investor likes to see a return on his investment, can you honestly believe that in five years time this vehicle will have appreciated in value?

Landrover have created the bubble by failing to announce a replacement. If / when there is a replacement and the form that takes will probably be the biggest factor on future values.

As long as there is a "scene" there will be scene tax. The over and above money we all pay for parts and vehicles because there is a bit of a cult following. As the value of the earlier restored models rises beyond the pocket of average Joe the value and desirability of later and last of breed models also rises.
Unfortunately everything I hanker after seems to sit in one or another of these "scenes" that are taxed. Best get saving because it won't stop me.

Like I said, I don't know "values" in the UK, but in Aussie, there are low mileage, near new Defenders priced 70/80% + over new, I'm not saying they're selling , but that's what they're listed at.
With a vehicle like the one in question, which is a high spec "top of the range" XS S.W., there maybe people out there who just want one, they couldn't/didn't buy one when production was current, so something like this may be their last opportunity to get a "new" one, in which case investment may not be the most important aspect of their purchase.
