so still have problems - having stripped off all the old connections, I now have what appears to be + and -ve connections for all lights, plus another thinker black lead that goes to earth. I don't quite understand why there is this other lead - it appears to be separate (at least, it comes out of the loom separate) to all the other leads - so a bit confused.
I also can't find a route from any positive back to the battery - connecting a circuit test between sidelight/indicator/side repeater + and either their respective - or the black earth one, or both, still shows no connection - which if I'd not turned on lights or indicators would be right, but is certainly odd when they are on.....
any ideas?

solved: like most things electrical on a Defender, it was a ground problem. Studied the wiring diagram, re-sorted the ground attachments, re-made all the electrical bullet terminations and connectors (bullet connector kit off eBay for about a fiver) and it's all working now. The -ve returns do attach to the earth cables somewheere in the wiring loom, so it has to be well earthed.....
Just got to put it back together again.
