Sad state of modern life.
I had it the other way with my daughter, she opened the Defender door right on to a guys brand new SUV. The door corner literally got stuck on his car. I felt terrible my daughter even worse, but held hands up, it's just the right thing to do. Luckily the paint rubbed off so all OK. aye normally the case! One lad remember got his car hit like that and it caused some damage, The woman had decided to swing open her door onto his car, she had a Range rover. He was in at the time, and he challenged her about it. She just said its an old Peugeot. So he removed her wing mirror and put it in his car. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Not quite the same thing, but involves a mum and kids.
I got hit in my ser 111 on the near side by a woman who crossed a give way line. I stopped to inspect my minor damage and to dislodge her plastic front bumper which was kind of stuck under my motor. She had a couple of kids in her motor and they all got out. The boys were a bit hyper and were desperate to see what was going on. As she looked at her own car I tried to shepherd the boys onto the pavement saying "Your mum has enough to think about just now without worrying about you two getting knocked down on the road". The boys continued being excited and wanting to know what was going on when one of them said "Mum, mum, is it as bad as the last time?" |

Not quite the same, but last week I was In Aldis car park and I pulled into one of those spaces reserved for mother and baby, Now I must point out that I pulled into the space to reverse into a bay opposite so that I could just drive out facing forward when I was leaving.
Before I had chance to put the Defender into reverse a woman who had parked in the adjoining bay with two children in tow loudly banged on my passenger side and procced to call me all the *!!***!! under the sun because I did not have any children with me and had parked in a bay reserved for families with children. She then screamed she was getting the manager. I tried to say I was not parking but just using the bay to manoeuvre, but it just sounded like an excuse. I did reverse into the opposite bay but of course the woman thought I was doing so because she had screamed abuse at me. I did think about the poor sod who was married to the woman and what it must be like, or even worse living next door to her. It's the joys of modern motorists that see a car as a way of getting from A to B, we as enthusiasts see our vehicles as family members at take pride in them, I have a D3 and with large rock/tree sliders down the side they have seen many car doors hitting them, I always park in off-road setting this means I have the joys of seeing their door fly closed nearly as quickly as they opened it into the slider, sometimes people apologies but more often than not "oh it's only a car it doesn't matter". 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Sadly, it's the kid operated rear doors that do the damage.
The high bottom corner where car doors curve up over the rear wheel raises it enough to ding a Defender door panel. Wish Land Rover still used Birmabright. That was ding resistant. Stopped mechanic's elbows from denting the tops of the front wings as well. |

The lack of morals, upbringing and lack of courage to own up to oneīs own mistakes has already been well covered.
Over here it is even worse, in my view. i get the impression they learn on the school playground that admitting a mistake is ALWAYS seen as weakness. "Admit, and you will lose". "Attack, is the best defence". In my opinion, despicacable. But there is another side to this. Modern motor cars are getting wider and wider, while conventional visibilty is being replaced by hopelessly over compicated technology.Door pockets that hold a 2 liter cola bottle and a bucket of Starbucks coffee at the same time are becoming the norm. The width of parking spaces hasnīt adapted, and the most motorists who do see their vehicle simply as a means of transport really are in it over their heads most of the time. Add a couple minature terrorists to the equation, and the young mother hasnīt got a chance. At least driving a Defender makes you a little less sensitive to these issues (unless the terrorists are inside). 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

I don't understand why when I park as far as I can from anyone else I always come back to my car with another car each side despite loads of free spaces , happens in the BM more than the Landy.
Unfortunately the BM is peppered with little dents and bangs from other people opening their doors against my car, I avoid anything with baby on board stickers, kids seats or rust , and if I do have to park next to another car I look for one that looks loved. still got loads of bangs though. like the original post my worst dent I witnessed and it was a teenager in the back of a rust bucket Toyoto that just had to park next to me despite the 100s of spaces free in our local BandQ. like the original post lots of denials despite me seeing it happen Ģ500 instantly knocked off the value of my car just great!! Supermarket car parks should be avoided where ever possible but if I have to use a car park I always try and park away from other vehicles. A few years ago I had no option but to park my Morgan in a supermarket car park and decided to park about 300metres away from the store in a far corner next to a wall so nobody would park next to me. When I came out of the store and looked across the car park I couldn't believe that with hundreds of vacant spaces adjacent to the store entrance some "pratt" had parked a rusty old transit van right next to my pride and joy. I was still cursing when I got back to the car and just as I approached, a guy got out of the transit and said, "bet you're wondering why some idiot has parked next to your Morgan?" " It did cross my mind", I said. "I have a Triumph TR6, which is immaculate and I hate anyone parking next to it, so I put my tranny next to your Morgan to protect it". What a nice man! Sometimes I'm really grateful that my landy has dents on every panel and is a bit rough around the edges!
Equally, with the chequer plate on the sills and the way the tyres stick out, there's not a lot for most car doors to hit. |

In my youth I had a brand new run out model ford Puma. It was my pride and joy and parked miles from any other car in a car park. Everytime I got back to it there was another car next to it, despite the 20 odd spare spaces around. Drove me nuts. It lasted 5 days before someone opened a door into it and dented the tricky curve from the door back. It took two goes for it to be repaired properly. I sort of gave up caring after that!
