New Wheels for my Series III
OK I bought it and I have a few jobs the garage are going to do before I pick it up.

I said I'm in no rush.... although I've visited recently and told them can it be ready 1st March.

In the mean time I am doing a lot of research into different things.

Chassis rust protector
Paint for body / wheels
Galvanizing
Hood sticks / tail gates / bits

I've been sourcing bits and bobs for it like rubber mats, found these wheels on ebay and they should look much better on it.

After some rear mudflaps and next purchase looking at exmoor seat belts.

You'll be needing a long wheelbase speedo to go with those 7.50's. Darren

^ How much difference will it be?

Will it under read or over read.

Loads of people do this so must be fairly common?

used a quick calculation web site , not sure of the height of each Tyre though

so came in as original at 30 mph the new ones the speedo would read 27 mph

I'm happy if its under Smile lets be honest 50 Mph would seem fast in this so if its reads 45 for example I can live with that.

It'll read under by about 12% from memory which, apart from being illegal, is an easy way to find yourself breaking the speed limit, e.g. you think you're doing 30 when you're closer to 35.

If it was the other way around then it's legal for a speedo to over-read by up to 10%.

Yes, loads of people do it and the fix is quite easy, which is to fit a speedo from a LWB model. Unlike later models, the gearing for the speedo drive is within the speedo itself and is indicated by a small four digit number along the bottom edge of the dial. I can't remember the exact numbers off hand (I last did this mod 25 years ago Shocked ) but it's something like 14xx for a SWB and 11xx or possibly 12xx for a LWB. I'm sure that Google will be your friend to confirm the details.

One of the small niceties of doing this is that it's relatively easy to change the odometer to match the existing. The glass face comes off and then the figures can be flicked around with a pencil or cocktail stick. Whilst some will frown upon this, it's difficult to imagine getting excited about the accuracy of the mileage on an ordinary vehicle of this vintage.

I suspect the hardest part may be finding a suitable LWB speedo... Darren

Changed the tyres on my series to 7.50s and I think that it drives better as it gears it up a little ,so the engine isn't having to rev so hard to reach "50mph" , which makes it a more relaxed drive.
As for the speedo it makes it almost spot on with the GPS. That's when the needle is readable and not fluctuating over about 20mph .
Radials also make for a nicer ride , you can always pop the 6.00 back on from time to time , nice little truck .

Those should smarten it up and make it more driveable Thumbs Up I'd probably have them powdercoated in Limestone myself for a more classic look, but since the white is so good probably not worth it.

I'd keep hold of the 6.00s and original wheels for originalitys sake.

On my 88", the speedo under reads by 5mph. Fine if you remember, I do, just one of those jobs I've just not got round to as I need to find the correct Series III type but without the trip meter from a later one. I found one but it had the wrong speedo cable connector on the back so the job got put to the backburner again Whistle Pete

Mine showed 25mph whilst I was sitting at 30. I put up with this for years before I picked up an old 109 to source bits from. The gearbox was a recon unit with O/D fitted so it was out of the 109 and into my 88 with it. The speedo head was also changed over and this gave me a reliable measurement of my road speed. It made very little difference to me but was one of those wee jobs that I had been meaning to get round to. Back then you could get old series motors for next to nothing as there were loads lying about that were rusted or hadn't turned a wheel in donkeys years. Still see the odd one sitting about, but mainly just a pile of rust on four wheels now a days. Old style garages usually had an old series wrecker sitting about somewhere, nostalgia - can't beat it. I'm sure I still have the old SWB rims knocking about, no idea what I'd do with them now, probably fit for scrap.

Thanks
